NFFHOF banquet to honor seven area football athletes

NATCHEZ &045; The Miss-Lou chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame will hold its 24th annual banquet Thursday and award scholarship to seven area scholar athletes and recognize seven junior high athletes.
The banquet will be at 7 p.m. at The Natchez Eola Hotel. Guest speaker will be Copiah-Lincoln Community College head football coach Glenn Davis. The banquet will include first-, second- and third-place scholarship awards and scholarships for the four remaining scholar-athletes.
High school athletes to be honored include Dustin Case of Adams Christian, Will Carter of Cathedral, Jamar Bowman of Ferriday, Trey Keith of Huntington, Edwin Murrell of Natchez High, Alex Allain of Trinity Episcopal and Michael Fuqua of Vidalia.
Junior high athletes to be honored include Duncan Guedon of Adams Christian, Harrison Burns of Cathedral, Levier Pryor of Ferriday, Steven Fowler of Huntington, Kendrin Calcote of Robert Lewis Middle, Kyle Ketchings of Trinity Episcopal and Jake Deweese of Vidalia.
The chapter will also recognize Jack Foster as a Contributor to American Football and T. Scott Kimbrell Sr. as Distinguished American Award.
Case, the son of Johnny and Donna Case, played quarterback, tailback and safety for the Rebels before being sidelined with a broken arm. He was voted Most Outstanding Defensive Back as a junior and as a senior named Offensive Player of the Week, All-District, second team All-State and was a MPSA All-Star while excelling for the Rebels in basketball and baseball.
Case had been on the headmaster’s list all four years of high school, was the junior high nominee prior to getting into high school, is a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and an active member of Community Methodist Church. He serves his community by donating canned goods to the Salvation Army and as an Army bell ringer. He gave out Christian boxes for Operation Christmas, made fruit baskets for the elderly and delivered baskets to home-bound elderly and nursing home residents. He has a 4.0 GPA scored a 24 on the ACT.
Will Carter, the son of Mark and Mary Ann Carter, played kicker for the Green Wave and lettered his senior year. He played soccer all four years of high school and also excelled in tennis. He is a member of the Student Council and Senior Class president, president of the National Honor Society, member of the Key Club and the Peer Ministry team. He is a lifelong member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and an altar server.
Carter has also achieved all requirements for an Eagle Scout and awaiting Board of Review with the current rank of Life Scout. He has had the high GPA for three years and received the 2004 NCTE English Writing award and was a MS Math and Science tournament finalist. He serves his community by volunteering at the nursing home ministry, Habitat for Humanity, Boys and Girls Club and the Natchez Children’s Home. He has a 4.375 GPA and scored a 32 on the ACT.
Bowman, the son of Helen Ceasor and Jimmy Bowman Jr., played center for Ferriday and was a two-time All-District lineman. He is a member of the National Youth Leader Conference, listed in Who’s Who Among High School Students, a member of the National Honor Society and a three-time literary rally participant.
Bowman is a member of St. James Baptist Church in Frogmore and is a member of the NAACP. He has a 3.72 GPA and scored a 19 on his ACT.
Keith, the son of Earl and Donna Keith, played running back for Huntington and lettered four years for the Hounds in football and baseball. He earned the team’s Most Valuable Player Award in baseball last season and was named to the All-District team. He lettered in powerlifting and was the junior high nominee for HHS before he arrived at high school.
Keith is the Student Council treasurer, attends Church of the Living God in Clayton, has a 3.0 GPA and scored a 22 on the ACT.
Murrell, the son of Willie and Gwendolyn Ware, played wide receiver for Natchez High. He earned Player of the Week honors and received the Highest Academic Award for two years. He also lettered in football three years.
Murrell was named Senior Class favorite, has been on the honor roll for four years, participates in Sigma Beta, attends Gospel Temple Church and brick mason and has a GPA of 3.36.
Allain, the son of Lisa and Tom Allain, played offensive guard and defensive tackle for Trinity Epsiscopal. He lettered four years and was named all-district his final three years, Sports Center Defensive Player of the Week as a junior and senior, earned the Saint Pride Award as a sophomore and junior and lettered in tennis and soccer while also participating in basketball and track.
His academic achievements include the headmaster’s list for four years, Who’s Who American High School Students for four years, National Honor Society, National Honor Roll for three years, Academic Betterment Competition and a state finalist for the Wendy’s High School Heisman award.
Allain has served on the Mayor’s Youth Council four years and has been a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, MSU Honors program, is an Acolyte at Trinity Episcopal Church and participates in Jefferson Street United Methodist Church’s youth group. He has served his community through the Toy Drive and Gift Distribution for Santa, Sweater for Someone, Thanksgiving Party at the retirement home, food drive, balloon race worker, collecting supplies at the Natchez Children’s Home, volunteering at the humane society, the Boys and Girls Club Christmas party, Habitat for Humanity, Stewpot, Adopt a Highway, blood drives, and the Historic Natchez Pageant.
Allain has a 4.03 GPA is scored a 28 on the ACT.
Fuqua, the son of Suzanne Hyde and Chuck Fuqua, played wide receiver and defensive back for Vidalia. He lettered in football for three years, received the Coach’s Award, the football scholastic award the past two years and earned honorable mention All-District.
Fuqua is a member of the Beta Club, has been accepted in the National Honor Roll and will enroll at LSU in the fall. He has a 3.8 GPA and scored a 22 on the ACT.
Davis, a former offensive coordinator at South Natchez, completed his first year as head football coach at Co-Lin this past season. A graduate of Delta State, he left South Natchez to join the staff at Mississippi State before landing at North Alabama, Holmes Community College and back at MSU before landing the Co-Lin job.
The Wolves finished 1-9 in 2004. They were 15-5 in his previous stint under former head coach Phil Broome.
