VIDALIA &045;&045; Most music industry bigwigs would tend to turn away from a singing group composed of three childhood friends who can’t play instruments or read music.

But that’s exactly what gospel singing trio D’Vine was 15 years ago, and today they’ve traveled the world performing for audiences of all sizes and all ages, sang in the White House and played a role in the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics.

Tonight, the Atlanta-based group’s touring resume will grow to include the Concordia Bank lobby in Vidalia.

Hosted by the Concordia Parish Library and sponsored by the Louisiana State Arts Council and the Arts Council and the Louisiana Division of the Arts of Central Louisiana, the all female group will perform at 7 p.m., free to the public.

D’Vine, composed of two sisters and a friend, formed when the young women returned home from college and decided they all wanted to be a part of a small musical act, member Paula Saunders said.

&uot;We just started practicing songs we’d grown up singing,&uot; Saunders said. &uot;We’d go to hospitals, nursing homes and prisons, where they didn’t care if you were bad. Singing in those settings fine tuned our style of singing and we learned how to make our voices blend.&uot;

The first paying gig came after a little while, and even though the singers never gave up their day jobs, they spend a great deal of time on the road, Saunders said from Alexandria, where D’Vine performed a community concert Wednesday night.

The group has stayed independent and performs about 150 concerts a year, she said. The current tour has them on the road for nearly all of March. After Vidalia the next stops are in North Carolina and South Carolina.

Saunders said the group has drawn audiences of all ages and performs a variety of musical styles in hopes of having something for everyone.

&uot;Most of our music is a cappella, but we do have songs that have a CD track to them,&uot; she said. &uot;It’s gospel, inspirational, patriotic and songs that don’t fall into any category.&uot;

Saunders said the show would be family and children friendly.

Other group members include Pamela Deas, Saunders’s sister, and Sheryl Pollard.

The group has released three CDs, &uot;Two Sisters and a Friend,&uot; &uot;Perfect Timing,&uot; and &uot;Simply D’Vine.&uot;

They will also perform at Ferriday Junior High School this afternoon.
