MONTEREY, La. &045; This pitching move was a good one.

Not that things were going bad for Gary Evans, but Monterey head coach Hank Zizzi pulled him after three after he allowed only three hits and one run. Matt Shively then went the last four while allowing no hits, walking none and hitting a batter to shut the door on Forest 4-1 in the District 3-B opener.

&uot;Gary was keeping the ball up,&uot; Zizzi said. &uot;I was thinking they were going to get to him the next time around. He really didn’t have great stuff today. (Shively’s) fastball was moving, and his curve was working today.&uot;

The outing was enough for the Wolves, who got timely hits to take the win. The Wolves (1-0, 4-14) had just four hits but got key doubles from Max Green and Evans to push runs across and take the lead.

Green doubled in the first, stole third and scored on a Layton Strebeck sacrifice fly. Evans doubled to lead off the fifth, went to third on a Landon White sacrifice and stole home for a 4-1 lead.

The Wolves got two in the fourth when Jordon Tiffee singled in Evans and Shively scored on an error.

Vidalia 12, Rayville 5

VIDALIA, La. &045; Vidalia’s bats were active early and often against Rayville Thursday to putt the Vikings ahead for good.

The Vikings added a run in the sixth to make the final score 12-5.

The teams combined for 12 errors in the game.
