Victim Richard Allan Cupstid, 33, 211 Jefferson St., Vidalia, died early Wednesday at University Medical Center in Jackson.

Cupstid was found lying on the side of the road in Concordia Parish near the intersection of Rountree Road and U.S. 84. He had been shot once in the head and was allegedly run over by the suspects, investigators said.

Sheriff Randy Maxwell said investigators believe the original intent of the suspects was robbery.

&uot;(The victim was) apparently in the wrong place at the wrong time,&uot; he said.

Witnesses said they saw a silver Mustang in the area around the time of the incident, a Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office release said.

Investigators located the vehicle within an hour of the initial 911 call at 2:41 a.m. Tuesday. The car had recently been washed and had a broken windshield, they said.

Short was at the residence where the vehicle was found. He and one other person were detained for questioning.

Maxwell commended investigators Jimmy Darden and David Hedrick and responding deputies for multiple hours of work on the case.

&uot; The investigators put in about 14 hours non-stop on this,&uot; Maxwell said.

Short was out on bond for a felony domestic abuse charge pending in South Carolina. In mid-February he was arrested by the Adams County Sheriff’s Office for South Carolina fugitive from justice charge.

Once ACSO deputies found out Short was in the county they started a search for him that resulted in a chase that led Short, deputies and the Natchez Police Department’s canine unit past Morgantown Elementary in Natchez. Short was stopped near the school and arrested.
