NATCHEZ &045; After a heartbreaking loss to Mize in the first game Friday, Cathedral needed a win over Enterprise just to keep their season alive.
For four innings, it looked like that was the last thing on the Green Wave’s minds.
&uot;That seventh inning of the Mize game really took it out of us,&uot; Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley said. &uot;We looked like we were sleepwalking for the first few innings of this game.&uot;
But in the fifth inning, the Green Wave (22-5) woke up and scored five runs en route to getting a 10-7 win over Enterprise (10-14). Cathedral will face Mize at 1 p.m. today. If the Green Wave wins that game, the teams will play again.
Trailing 6-3 coming into the fifth, Patrick McDonough got things started when he was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game. Andrew Ellard followed with a walk and Preston Hicks drove them both home with a double to right field.
Jeremy Davis got a bloop single to shallow center and Charlie Lane walked to load the bases. Then Drew Burns stepped up to the plate. Burns ripped a line drive down the third base line, clearing the bases and giving Cathedral its first lead of the night at 8-6.
&uot;I just hit it over the third baseman. That’s the first hit I’ve had all night,&uot; Burns said. &uot;That helped us finally get on and score some runs.&uot;
And that wasn’t even Burns’ best work of the day. He pitched five innings in relief of Alex Middleton, making his first appearance of the year on the mound.
Burns allowed just three runs despite being limited to throwing only fastballs because of a rotator cuff injury.
&uot;At the beginning of the year, I expected a lot from him, but he hurt his rotator cuff and we decided not to use him,&uot; Beesley said. &uot;But I know he’s a competitor, that he doesn’t like to lose. There are some people who can pitch through pain and some who can’t handle any pain. I know he’s the kind that can work through it.&uot;
Burns said he’s been waiting to pitch all year. His last outing for the Green Wave came in the first game of last season.
&uot;I’ve been wanting to pitch all year, but coach wanted to make sure I didn’t get hurt,&uot; Burns said. &uot;I just finally begged him enough and he wanted to save some people for tomorrow.&uot;
Enterprise’s best offense may have been the Cathedral defense. The Green Wave committed five errors in the first two innings as Enterprise scored four runs, including two by leadoff hitter Jonathan Beeson, who reached base on errors in both innings.
Cathedral struggled on offense early in the game, leaving eight runners on base in the first three innings while scoring just one run, when Lane came home on an error.
&uot;Give their pitcher a lot of credit,&uot; Beesley said. &uot;He did a pretty good job.&uot;
Enterprise pitcher Matt Floyd started against Cathedral and pitched four innings after pitching 5 1/3 in the Yellow Jackets’ win over Puckett Friday.
