March 29, 1917-Feb. 20, 2005
NATCHEZ – Services for Elizabeth M. Bland, 87, of Natchez, who died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005, at Natchez Community Hospital, will be 11 a.m. Friday at Jerusalem Baptist Church with the Rev. Ernest Ford officiating.
Burial will be in the Natchez National Cemetery under the direction of Robert D. Mackel and Sons Funeral Home.
Visitation is from noon until 5 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Bland was born March 29, 1917, in Wilkinson County, the daughter of the late Henry McCullough and Mary Myles McCullough.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and 11 siblings.
Survivors include a brother, Robert McCullough of Natchez; sister, Ernestine Williams and husband, Joe, of Natchez; daughter, Louise Brooks of Brookhaven; 11 grandchildren; a host of great-great-grandchildren; great-great-great-grandchildren; a host of other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers will be Kendrick Baldwin, Keldrick Evans, Robert Plummer Jr., Henry Fletcher, Kelvin Harris, and Darren Plummer.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmie Baldwin Jr., Tommie Lee Baldwin, Alvin Baldwin, Patrick Baldwin, Robert Plummer Sr., Alfred Evans, Anthony Edwards, Jimmie Jones Sr., and Drew P. Dottery.
Howard Bell Peabody Jr.
Oct. 24, 1919-Nov. 1, 2003
NATCHEZ – Graveside services for Howard Bell Peabody Jr. will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005. He died Nov. 1, 2003, in Metairie, La. According to his wishes, his body was donated to the Tulane School of Medicine for research. His remains will be interred at the Learned Mausoleum in the Natchez City Cemetery.
Mr. Peabody was born Oct. 24, 1919, in Chicago, Ill. He graduated from the Choate School in Wallingford, Conn., and attended Washington and Lee University for two years before entering the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N. Y. He graduated in 1944 and served at sea for the duration of World War II. After the war he moved to Natchez where he lived and worked in his family’s timber and farming businesses for 35 years. In 1981 he moved to Blue Hill, Maine, and in 1992, to Metairie, La.
In Natchez, Mr. Peabody served for many years on the board of Britton and Koontz National Bank. He was also an active participant and supporter of the Natchez Little Theatre, and one of the founding members of the Historic Natchez Foundation. He was a quiet supporter of a number of philanthropic organizations.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Pipes Peabody; a son, David Holmes Peabody of Alexandria, Va.; three daughters, Elizabeth P. Miles, Louise Learned Peabody, both of New Orleans, La., and Margaret P. Cotten, of Huntsville, Ala.; a brother, Andrew Learned Peabody; and eight grandchildren.
Montae Aldridge Holcolmb
PETAL – Private memorial services for Montae Aldridge Holcolmb, 78, of Petal, who died recently, will be held in Brookhaven.
Mrs. Holcolmb was born Jan. 11, 1926, in Jackson, the daughter of the late Byron David and Carrie Starkey Aldridge. She was a graduate of Natchez High School and was a freelance artist.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first and second husbands, Brent Greer and Verle Holcolmb; and one brother, Sedley Joseph Greer Jr.
Survivors include two sons, David Monte Greer of Baton Rouge, La. and Robert Greer of Petal; daughter, Judy Greer Britt of Petal; two grandchildren; brother, Byron David Aldridge Jr. of Natchez; two sisters, Mary Jo Aldridge Gunde of New Orleans, La. and Ann Greer Wise of Jonesborough, Tenn.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
