VIDALIA — The Block Lady Bears did not look like one of the top teams in Class 1A for the first half of their game against LaSalle High School Friday afternoon.
Block couldn’t get anything going for three innings, and LaSalle had an upset on its mind after taking a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning. The Lady Bears’ bats finally woke up at just the right time as they scored four runs in the frame and went on to defeat the Lady Tigers 5-3 in a LHSAA District 4-1A game.
The game was played at Vidalia because Block’s softball field was unplayable due to the recent rain that came through the Miss-Lou.
LaSalle jumped right out of the gate and scored two runs off starting pitcher Kayla Smith to take the early lead. Block got on the scoreboard with one run in the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Lady Tigers responded with one run of their own to go up by two runs before the Lady Bears rallied in the bottom of that same inning.
Smith went the distance and allowed three runs on five hits and struck out seven batters. Tee Harbor went 2-for-2 with one run batted in for the Lady Bears. Abbey Ryan had two RBIs while Michala Hughes and Kelly Mott each had one RBI. LaSalle was led by K. Gaines, who went 3-for-4 with a double and a triple.
Block (15-6, 3-0) hosts Montgomery at 4 p.m. next Monday.
