VIDALIA &045;&045; Hulon Estis and Bonnie Garcia have cars in their eyes.

The Vidalia couple spent some time peeking in the windows of classic cars Friday night as a preview to Cruisin’ on the River, the annual classic car show hosted by the River City Bad Boyz car club.

&uot;(There’s) something about the old classic cars,&uot; Estis said. &uot;There’s just a carbuerator and air mixture. Today’s cars are 80 percent computer, 10 percent plastic and 10 percent rubber.&uot;

Garcia is a Corvette fan, while Estis likes GTOs.

At 24 and 21, respectively, Estis and Garcia aren’t in a position to afford a classic car right now.

&uot;I’m hoping to, someday,&uot; Estis said.

&uot;I’m praying to,&uot; Garcia added.

Estis pointed out that many of the car owners in this weekend’s show must have started as they did &045;&045; &uot;just drooling.&uot;

Garcia and Estis were among those who took a peek at the cars while many of the owners and their vehicles were on a cruise on U.S. 84 in Ferriday and Vidalia.

To Mike Sennett of Vidalia, the classic cars are more than just transportation.

&uot;It’s an artform,&uot; he said. &uot;The styling, the design, the colors. … In this area there’s a major emphasis on (history) before the 1900s. It’s nice to see 20th century art.&uot;

Sennett, too, wouldn’t mind owning a classic car one day.

Lindel Smith of Kirbyville, Texas, used to feel that way &045;&045; but now he’s a classic car owner himself.

As a high school graduate he worked for a Chevrolet dealer and owned a 1957 Chevrolet, but he had to sell the car before he went to Vietnam.

After the war and a career in banking, he was able to buy his dream car again a decade ago.

&uot;I knew someday I’d have another ’57,&uot; he said.

Smith’s club, the Lakes Area Cruisers, brought about 10 cars to this weekend’s show, which is expected to host up to 100 classic cars.

They will be on display today and Sunday morning along the riverfront in Vidalia.
