Early plays haunt Lady Vikings in loss at state

SULPHUR, La. &045; Big games often come down to little plays like these: a close play at the plate or a little bloop single.
Unfortunately, that doesn’t make the Vidalia Lady Vikings’ loss Friday night any easier to accept. The Lady Vikings had two runners thrown out at the plate in the early innings before Kinder prevailed for a 2-1 win in a Class 2A quarterfinal contest at Frasch Park in Sulphur.
The win put the Lady Yellowjackets in the semifinals today against South Beauregard but ended the Lady Vikings’ season at 20-12.
&uot;Those were things we should have overcome, but I can’t complain,&uot; Vidalia head coach Gary Paul Parnham said. &uot;We got to the state tournament. There were a lot of other teams that weren’t playing today, and we were one of the eight that were. But I’ll you this as the coach for Vidalia &045; the better team did not win this game. We should have won, but sometimes that’s how it happens.&uot;
The Lady Pirates stayed with it with pitcher Malori LaFargue on the mound to keep the score at 1-0 in favor of Vidalia before putting up a run in each of the last two innings off Vidalia starter Christy Corley to take the win.
Corley rung up two outs in the sixth before the Lady Yellowjackets found a way to scratch for a run. Whitney Bell slapped a double for one of Kinder’s three hits off Corley, and Shawna Langley followed her with a single to score Bell and tie the score at 1-1.
Then in the seventh LaFargue led off with a single, and Kyle Scoggins came up an out later and singled in LaFargue for the game-winning run.
Corley struck out four and didn’t walk any.
&uot;She was throwing well,&uot; Parnham said. &uot;They came up with hits when they needed them.&uot;
The Lady Vikings had chances in the first and third innings but had runners thrown out at the plate. Lauren Clayton led off the game with a triple, but when she tried to tag up on a flyout to left LaFargue cut off the throw and nailed Clayton out at the plate for a double play.
Bridget Waller got to third in the third inning and tried to score on a passed ball, but the throw was quick enough to get her at the plate for the out.
&uot;(LaFargue) was throwing batting practice, to be honest with you,&uot; Parnham said. &uot;I don’t know. I hate to say it, but that first inning we got the call at home and that kind of took us out of the inning. Then the third inning the same thing happened. We were hitting balls right at them, and we were hitting it hard. It just wasn’t falling. There’s nothing we should be ashamed of.&uot;
The Lady Vikings got their run in the third when Chelsie McElwee tripled and scored when Chelsey Knapp grounded out back to the pitcher.
Kinder will face South Beauregard today in a semifinal after SB edged Riverside 4-3. In the other semis, Pine Prairie won 3-1 and DeQuincy won 7-4.
