NATCHEZ &045; Dressed up as characters such as Judy Garland in a ponytail wig and Frank Sinatra in a tuxedo and top hat mouthing to &uot;Singing in the Rain,&uot; students of Pleasant Acre Day School performed for the audience at the United Way building’s grand opening celebration on Thursday.

After United Way’s three-year search for a headquarters location, Callon Petroleum donated a building to the non-profit organization, allowing United Way to pay a nominal rent.

Callon employees, including CEO Fred Callon, joined Mayor Phillip West and United Way and chamber of commerce board members for the ribbon cutting at the building.

Next to the courtyard at the Callon Petroleum gateway, the beige building at 206 North Canal has been painted and remodeled for the needs of the organization.

Doug Nigreville, chairman of Miss-Lou’s United Way board, gave much credit to Bob Mayfield, a Callon employee, for the success of the building.

&uot;He tirelessly helped. I can’t say enough good things about him,&uot; Nigreville said.

Though the opening was cause of much excitement, it was not the only reason to celebrate for Marilyn Turner, a volunteer board member for the organization.

&uot;I’m excited about our new director Kathy Stephens,&uot; she said.

Stephens has served as United Way’s chief professional officer for four months. The opening of the headquarters is only one accomplishment for the United Way checklist for the year.

&uot;We are aiding in answering health care programs,&uot; Stephens said.

United Way is focusing on getting needed prescriptions to patients.

The organization is partnering with Perspective Prescriptions to achieve its target goals.

Other projects are also in the works, such as the annual fund-raising campaign that will begin in August.

Like Callon’s unique donation, Stephens said there are various opportunities to contribute to the United Way’s cause, such as leaving contributions in wills and donation of land.

&uot; There are many ways you can give to United Way, but volunteering is our most welcomed and needed form,&uot; Stephens said.
