NATCHEZ &045; The meeting aldermen recessed May 24 will resume at 2 p.m. today.
At that meeting, city officials will receive proposals from developers for the former Natchez Pecan Factory site. But that won’t be the only thing on the agenda.
Mayor Phillip West said he and the Board of Aldermen are also set to discuss in more details candidates for the vacant city planner position.
On Wednesday city officials interviewed three candidates for the position from a field of 20 who applied for the job, with Mimi Miller, director of education and preservation for the Historic Natchez Foundation, sitting in.
Two candidates who sent in resumes before the city advertised the position were interviewed several weeks ago.
West said the planner position and other personnel issues are set to be discussed Wednesday, although he did not give further specifics.
The discussion might not be made with the public present, however. Under state law, personnel items may be discussed in an executive, or closed-door, session.
Former City Planner Bob Jackson resigned in February, after a little more than one year on the job, to return to Arizona, where he had formerly served as a planner for Native American tribes.
The city’s personnel office received 21 applications &045; four from Mississippi, two from Tennessee and the rest from as far away as California, Michigan, Ohio and North Carolina. Gibson said one application was unreadable and that candidate has not returned her call.
Of the other applicants, seven have American Institute of Certified Planners certification, which a planner must complete a certain amount of training to achieve. In addition, two applicants have significant historic preservation experience.
In advertising the position on the American Planning Association’s Web site, the city said it preferred someone AICP certified with a master’s degree and education and/or experience in historic preservation.
