NATCHEZ &045; Nicole Crochet and Robert Plucienski have been here before, and not that long ago.
The duo won the girls and boys overall championships &045; and their divisions &045; at the Westfield Junior PGA Gulf States Section Championship Wednesday at Beau Pr Country Club, earning a trip for each of them to the Westfield Tournament in Ohio later this summer.
Champions from each of the 41 sections and from some special tournaments go to the prestigious junior tournament each year. Crochet and Plucienski will each be going for the second time.
&uot;It’s great. It’s like the best tournament ever,&uot; Plucienski said. &uot;You have all the best juniors in the country playing in it.&uot;
Crochet had an easier time of it that Plucienski, but only because she managed to avoid the long rain delay the boys’ divisions had to sit through Wednesday afternoon.
Most of the boys were just starting the back nine when a round of thunderstorms sent them packing for the clubhouse. After thirty minutes or so of waiting, another round hit the area, forcing a further postponement of play by tournament officials.
The girls divisions were nearly done early in the afternoon when the first round of storms came into the area and finished off their rounds quickly to beat the rain.
&uot;We were so close to finishing I just wanted to get it over with,&uot; Crochet, from Harahan, La., said.
Crochet held off Amanda McDonald by shooting a 76 Wednesday to take the girls 16-18 and overall championships.
&uot;I was striking the ball well, but I could not make a putt at all,&uot; Crochet said. &uot;I had all my good shots in the fairway but once I got to the green the putting wasn’t there.&uot;
That 76 was even better than Crochet’s first-round 79, giving her the best two scores by any girl in the tournament.
In the girls 13-15 division, Heather Lott of Baton Rouge ran away with the title, shooting rounds of 82 and 85 for 167 to best Taylor Griffin’s 206 total. But Lott said she should have scored even better.
&uot;I could have played better, really,&uot; Lott said. &uot;I had one birdie and then a bunch of holes I didn’t do so well.&uot;
Ellie Chai won the girls 10-12 division, shooting a 40 and 44 for a total of 84. The 10-12 division plays nine holes each day.
After a rain delay of about two hours, the boys finally did finish play late in the afternoon.
Plucienski, from Slidell, La., shot a 72 the first round and was just one stroke off in the second with a 73 for a two-day score of 145, two strokes better than second place Scott Porche.
Plucienski said the rain delay hurt his play, though it didn’t affect the outcome of the tournament.
&uot;After the rain I went out on the course and I don’t think I played that well,&uot; Plucienski said. &uot;I was two over on the last six holes. It got me tired and I couldn’t focus.&uot;
Tyler Ledet of Woodworth, La., took the boys 13-15 division and finished second behind Plucienski in the overall with rounds of 75 and 72 for 147. At 13, Tyler was one of the youngest competitors playing in the top two divisions.
&uot;I three-putted on No. 6 and 7 or else it could have been better, but I was pleased with my play,&uot; Ledet said.
David Griffin, the opening round co-leader in 13-15 with Ledet, finished second with rounds of 75 and 75 for 150.
In the boys 10-12, Peyton Vitter won a scorecard playoff over Myles Lewis. Vitter shot 38 and 37 for 75 and Lewis shot 37 and 38 for 75.
