NATCHEZ &045; Get walking.
That’s the message behind National Trails Day, sponsored by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The theme this year is &uot;Take the path to a healthier you,&uot; and local hiking enthusiasts have a new place to get their fix.
St. Catherine Creek National Wildlife Refuge will hold its first-ever walk in honor of National Trails Day from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday on the newly opened hiking trail at the refuge. The trail runs three miles through the forested hills on the western edge of the park near the headquarters building.
The trail, the product of more than three years of work, will be officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony before the walk.
The trail may be named a national trail, which designates trails of national and local significance, at Saturday’s event.
Refuge staff members are hoping for a good turnout.
&uot;I would be thrilled if we got 40 or 50 people out here for this,&uot; Charman Cupit, the refuge’s office manager, said.
