Five jury incumbents win outright

NATCHEZ — No incumbents in the Concordia Parish Police Jury were eliminated in Saturday’s election, but three of them have a month left to prove to voters why they deserve to keep their seat at the table.
Five incumbents won re-election in Concordia Parish police jury races, while the other three will face runoffs on April 21.
In District 1-A, incumbent Carey Cook defeated challenger Marcus Martin. Cook, a Democrat, had 754 votes, or 69 percent, and Martin, a Democrat, had 343 votes, or 31 percent.
In District 1-B, incumbent Joe Parker defeated challenger Steve Gray. Parker, a Democrat, had 737 votes, or 64 percent, and Gray, a Democrat, had 415 votes, or 36 percent.
In District 3-B, incumbent “Whest” Shirley defeated Raymond “RC” West. Shirley, a Republican, had 1,135 votes, or 85 percent, and West, an Independent, had 206 votes, or 15 percent.
In District 4-A, incumbent Jerry Beatty defeated challenger Curtis Nelson. Beatty, a Democrat, had 609 votes, or 60 percent, and Nelson, a Republican, had 411 votes, or 40 percent.
In District 5-B, incumbent Red Tiffee won the three-person race outright by defeating Kent Campbell and Tim Charrier by more than 50 percent plus one vote.
Tiffee, a Democrat, had 440 votes, or 57 percent, Charrier, a Democrat, had 167 votes, or 22 percent, and Campbell, a Republican, had 160 votes, or 21 percent.
In District 2, incumbent Willie Dunbar will face Fred Marsalis in a runoff.
Dunbar, a Democrat, had 309 votes or 47 percent, and Marsalis, a Democrat, had 208 votes, or 32 percent.
Also in the race, Betty Albert Wilson, a Democrat, had 87 votes, or 13 percent, Richard White, a Democrat, had 32 votes, or five percent and Anthony “Bro Man” Lewis had 22 votes, or three percent.
In District 4B, long-time incumbent and current Police Jury President Melvin Ferrington will face challenger Jimmy Wilkinson in a runoff.
Ferrington, a Democrat, had 347 votes, or 34 percent, and Wilkinson, an Independent, had 344 votes, or 34 percent.
Also in the race, Michael Lyles, a Democrat, had 185 votes, or 18 percent, and David Turner, an Independent, had 135 votes, or 13 percent.
In District 5A, incumbent Jimmy Jernigan will face Samuel Tom Lowry in a runoff.
Jernigan, a Democrat, had 260 votes or 42 percent, and Lowry had 161 votes, or 26 percent.
Also in the race, Wilbur “Steel Bill” Washington, a Democrat, had 82 votes, or 13 percent, Jack Crane, a Republican, had 59 votes, or 10 percent, Karl Davis, a Democrat, had 35 votes, or six percent, and Kari Tarver, a Democrat 16 votes, or three percent.
Other parish races:
In the Town of Clayton aldermen race, seven candidates ran for the available five aldermen positions.
The top five candidates who received the most votes were Floyd L. Barber, a Democrat; Houston Holmes, a Democrat; Irene Jefferson, a Democrat; Leroy Kelly, an Independent; and Shannon Burns Madison, a Democrat.
Blanche “Sandy” Clayton and Willie L. “Bill” Evans received the least number of votes.
Madison had 159 votes, or 19 percent; Barber had 150 votes, or 18 percent, Jefferson had 138 votes, or 16 percent; Holmes had 126 votes, or 15 percent; Kelly had 111 votes, or 13 percent; Evans had 96 votes, or 11 percent; and Clayton had 689 votes, or eight percent.
