Softball roundups: Daggett, CHS top Loyd Star

BROOKHAVEN — Ginny Daggett had a strong night on the mound for the Cathedral High School softball team Friday afternoon.
Daggett allowed just two hits and struck out six batters in six innings as the Cathedral Lady Green Wave rolled past the Loyd Star Lady Hornets 12-1 in six innings.
Cathedral jumped out to an 8-0 lead before Loyd Star scored its lone run in the bottom of the second inning. Daggett went 2-for-4 with a double at the plate, and Mollie Devening led a 17-hit attack by going 4-for-4 for Cathedral.
The Lady Green Wave improved to 8-4-1 overall and returns to MHSAA Region 7-1A action next Tuesday when it plays at St. Aloysius in the finale of a three-game road trip. The junior varsity game starts at 5 p.m. and will be followed by the varsity game at 6 p.m.
Vidalia 11, Block 8
VIDALIA — Block’s Tee Harbor hit for the cycle in her four at-bats against Vidalia Friday night at the Vidalia Tournament, but the Lady Vikings used a couple of big innings to get past the Lady Bears.
Vidalia trailed Block 5-4 as the top of the fourth inning came to an end, but the Lady Vikings responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth and three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take an 11-6 lead. Kelsey Partridge was 4-for-5 and Kennedy Beard went 2-for-5 with a double.
Vidalia (12-9) has two games today, first against Mangham at 9:30 a.m. and then against LaSalle at 3:30 p.m. Block (14-6) takes on Mangham today at 5:30 p.m.
Monterey 1, Avoyelles Charter 0
MONTEREY — Paige Bryan threw a complete-game shutout and held Avoyelles Charter to just three hits as the Monterey Lady Wolves edged past the Lady Vikings Friday afternoon in an LHSAA District 4-B game.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Ellen Bairnsfather walked, went to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Jody Duncan and then stole third base. Avoyelles Charter tried to throw Bairnsfather out at third, but an errant throw allowed her to score the game-winning run. Monterey (10-7, 4-0) plays at Avoyelles Charter Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Franklin County 13, Seminary 9
MEADVILLE — After trailing 6-0, Franklin County used a seven-run rally in the third inning to en route to a comeback win against the visiting Lady Bulldogs Friday night in their MHSAA Region 7-3A opener
Franklin County added four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to go ahead 11-7 and then it scored two key runs in the bottom of the sixth after Seminary made it an 11-9 game in the top of the sixth.
Krislyn Kent, Kierra Collins, Mildred Starks and Kiarra Sykes each went 2-for-4 with a double for Franklin County (4-6-1, 1-0), which plays at West Marion next Tuesday with the JV game at 5 p.m. and the varsity game at 6 p.m.
Sterlington 1, Block 0
VIDALIA — Sterlington’s Sarah Gandy limited Block to three hits in seven scoreless innings as the Lady Panthers defeated the Lady Bears Friday night at the Vidalia Tournament.
Gandy won a good pitchers’ duel with Block’s Kayla Smith. Smith allowed only two hits and struck out three over six innings, but Sterlington finally broke a scoreless game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Gandy walked two and hit two batters while Smith walked two batters.
