NATCHEZ — Tuesday afternoon’s MHSAA Region 7-1A game between West Lincoln and Cathedral was a pitchers’ duel between the Bears’ Jared Case and the Green Wave’s Blake Martin.
And Cathedral’s Thomas Garrity played the hero on offense, singling in Daniel Huffines with the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning to give the Green Wave a hard-fought 1-0 win over West Lincoln.
Martin went the distance and was the winning pitcher as he allowed just one hit — a double by Jeremy Laird — to go with eight strikeouts and two walks.
“I thought Blake gave us a good outing with seven strong innings. Defense made some good plays behind him,” Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley said. “I knew it was going to be a low-scoring game. We had some scoring opportunities earlier in the game.”
With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Huffines hit a double and the Green Wave finally got on the board thanks to Garrity’s base hit.
Even though he was charged with the loss, Case was outstanding himself as he allowed one run on four hits, struck out three batters and walked three in six innings.
Brandon 10, Natchez High 0
BRANDON — The Brandon Bulldogs hit a pair of three-run home runs, one in the bottom of the sixth inning that 10-run ruled the Natchez High Bulldogs Tuesday afternoon in MHSAA Region 6-6A action.
“They’re a very good team. Well-coached team. They threw two pitchers that threw in the mid- to high-80s,” Natchez High head coach Skip Golding said. “They swing the bat well. They’re going to be tough to beat in (Region 6-6A). Dominique Salter pitched a good game. We get another chance at them Friday.”
Natchez High hosts Brandon Friday with the JV game at 4 p.m. and the varsity game at 6 p.m.
