JONESVILLE — The St. Mary’s Lady Tigers from Natchitoches, La. got to Block pitcher Kayla Smith with four runs to start off the game. It was all Lady Bears after that in this LHSAA District 4-1A battle.
Block, the No. 2 team in Class 1A, used a four-run rally in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead for good and then scored 13 runs in the bottom of the fourth to use the 10-run-after-five-innings rule to roll past St. Mary’s 18-4 Monday afternoon.
The Lady Tigers used small ball and took advantage of some Lady Bears miscues to jump out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
“We made all three errors in that inning. They had a bunt and a couple of bloop singles,” Block head coach Robert Swayze said. “Then the pitching and defense settled down.”
Smith went the distance as she allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits, struck out five and walked five. She also batted in a couple of runs.
The Lady Bears scored one run in the bottom of the first inning to start the comeback bid, but it was the second and fourth innings that proved to be the difference.
“We batted around almost two times (in the bottom of the fourth),” Swayze said. “Just hit the ball real good.
Michala Hughes went 2-for-2 with five runs batted in while Molly Swayze had four RBIs. Maura Cooper was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Abbey Ryan was 2-for-3.
