As of 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Red Cross shelters in Natchez had space to accommodate around 700 more people.
The Steckler Multipurpose Center off Seargent S. Prentiss Drive currently has about 200 people fleeing Hurricane Katrina, most from the New Orleans area.
Those seeking shelter can follow signs to the Steckler building, which is across from Wal-Mart.
Once the shelter reaches capacity, around 300 people, other shelters will open.
Parkway Baptist Church, also on Seargent S. Prentiss Drive, will open first, followed by Community Chapel Church of God on Oakland Drive, near Morgantown Road.
If needed Washington Baptist Church on Old Highway 84 No. 1 will be opened.
For families seeking shelter who have not yet left home, shelter workers recommend bringing along sleeping bags or pillows.
Shelters can provide pillows and blankets and some mats and cots while supplies last.
