Baseball notebook: Local teams improving as district opponents loom

LAUREN WOOD | THE NATCHEZ DEMOCRAT — Vidalia High School’s Nate Bozeman scoops up the ball to throw to first as Jonesboro-Hodge High School’s Ray Ray Walker runs to first during Saturday’s game at Vidalia baseball field.

VIDALIA — After a 18-8 win against Jonesboro-Hodge Saturday night, the Vidalia High School baseball team is now 9-5 heading into Tuesday’s district game against Jena.

The Vikings also beat Delhi Parish High School and lost to West Feliciana High School in their Vidalia High School Tournament over the weekend, and head coach Kale Davis said he was glad to see his team get some work in.

“(These tournaments) give you the opportunity to get more games under your belt and get prepared for district,” Davis said. “You get more at-bats, and your pitchers get more time on the mound.”

Davis also said he was happy to be able to sub in some of his younger players during what was spring break for Vidalia High School.

“We got to play some younger guys,” Davis said. “Even though we’re living for the moment, we also have to prepare for the future. It could’ve been better, but I’ll take the results we had, and we’re just going to build upon that.”

Vidalia and Jena will square off at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

ACCS

NATCHEZ — The Smith Wills Spring Break Classic in Jackson this past week meant plenty of games for the Rebels despite school being out this week.

ACCS (9-3-1) opened up with a 9-0 win Monday against Starkville Academy, then it tied Simpson Academy 11 and beat East Rankin 11-2 Tuesday night. The Rebels lost to Tri-County Academy 5-1 in the championship game Wednesday.

McKeivier said he saw glimpses of greatness from his team, and said there’s a lot to look forward to with this year’s squad if his players can keep improving.

“I learned that we have the ability to play great baseball when we’re mistake-free and get great pitching,” McKeivier said.

“This week has been an indicator of how great we can be. We hit well, we played good defense at times, though that last game kind of got away from us, and our pitching was outstanding. We just have to get better every day at the fundamentals and keep the current momentum going.”

With WCCA coming up Monday and district opponent Brookhaven Academy set to face the Rebels Tuesday, McKeivier said being able to play as big a non-district schedule as his team did should help get his players prepared.

“I was excited to get the amount of games under our belt that we did before district starts,” he said. “It allowed us to solidify our rotation and our lineup.”

The Rebels will host WCCA Monday at 7 p.m.

Cathedral High School

The Green Wave didn’t fare quite as well as ACCS last week in terms of getting some games in over spring break.

“We thought we had a good schedule set up,” Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley said. “We had WCCA (March 9), Porter’s Chapel (March 10) and Tupelo Christian (March 12), but they all got rained out.”

Cathedral’s lone game in the last week was a 12-1 win against Monterey last Tuesday.

“We start (region) play on Tuesday, and it just didn’t work out for us,” Beesley said. “Any time you lose games when you can only schedule so many during the year, it hurts. The only game we really can make up is WCCA, and that will require finding a common off day, which will be tough.”

Long layoffs can be especially troublesome in baseball, Beesley said, since his hitters don’t get the chance to see live pitching.

“The more live pitching you see, the better off you’ll be,” Beesley said. “We lost a lot this week, so hopefully we’ll come out hitting well Tuesday. We’ve really only played two games in two weeks against Vidalia (March 6) and Monterey.”

Cathedral (4-3) will host West Lincoln at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
