Dixie Youth tryouts postponed

NATCHEZ — Wet fields and cold temperatures are affecting baseball all throughout the Miss-Lou — and that’s not just in the high school ranks.
Tryouts for the Dixie Youth baseball league, which were originally scheduled for Thursday, have been postponed until March 11.
Porky Smith, league commissioner for the 9- and -10-year-olds, said the re-scheduling is due to the poor playing conditions caused by rain.
“It’s just too cold to get these 7- to 12-year-olds out there to hit a couple of balls and field a couple of balls,” Smith said.
Registration is taking place at SportsCenter, and runs through March 11. Tryouts for 7- and 8-year-olds will be at Sprague-Goussett Field; for 9- and 10-year-olds, Ballew-Bowlin Field; and for 11- and 12-year-olds, Carroll-Jones Field.
“We are still accepting kids until tryouts (begin),” Smith said. “March 4 was the originally deadline, but since we’re postponing tryouts, we’re going to take kids until we have tryouts.”
Interest has been strong, Smith said, but he added that he would like to see more 9- and 10-year-olds register.
“We’ve gotten about 250 kids signed up, but only about 51 9- and 10-year-olds. We really need kids ages 9 and 10. Anyone is welcome to register, but I know that age group really needs kids. The more the merrier.”
