Saints pick up pace in win over Brookhaven Academy

NATCHEZ &045; Playing close to the vest in a jamboree is perfectly understandable.

But everyone got a glimpse of what Trinity Episcopal can do when teams start loading up in the box to try and stop Stevan Ridley.

Brookhaven Academy struggled stopping the standout junior back on one scoring drive, and the first play on the next possession was an ordinary screen pass from Parker Brumfield to Tripp Bryant. But Bryant turned on the burners and made it a 60-yard touchdown pass for a 16-0 Trinity Episcopal lead.

The Saints held on for the win after taking a 6-0 win over Huntington in the first game of the Adams Christian jamboree Friday.

&uot;I tried,&uot; Bryant said. &uot;I looked up and saw no one on me. The pass was designed to me. I thought I’d have a cornerback cover me or something, but that was it. Having Stevan opens up a lot of plays for us. They’re not expecting it, and we took them by surprise.&uot;

The Saints may have taken a lot of folks by surprise in that second game against a good Brookhaven Academy team, although the Cougars sat little playmaking quarterback Price Sessums in the second session.

The Cougars struggled offensively at times with Corey Dickerson at quarterback, and the Saints were more effective on that side of the ball.

Bryant’s score came on the heels of the Saints’ six-play, 69-yard drive that was all

Ridley except for a 12-yard run from Clint Easom. Ridley scored on a 2-yard run with 8:27 left for an 8-0 lead.

&uot;We called (Bryant’s) play because that cornerback was way inside every time,&uot; Trinity head coach David King said. &uot;That’s plays we run every now and then to keep teams honest. It takes a while to get into the flow of the offense. They never did stop us. We were sloppy (against Huntington). We didn’t execute, but that’s why we play jamborees. Everything we did wrong today we can correct.&uot;

The Saints picked it up a notch on both sides of the ball in their second session against Brookhaven than in the first one against the Hounds. Brookhaven’s three possessions all ended in a punt.

&uot;I don’t know what it was &045; maybe we weren’t up for the first game,&uot; Bryant said. &uot;We weren’t ready to play, but we were definitely up for the second game.&uot;

The only miscue the Saints had on offense came on their first possession when a fumble ended the drive on the third play.

Even after Brookhaven punted on its third drive, the Saints moved the ball and ran out the clock with Matthew Freeman and Easom moving the chains.

&uot;We’re definitely not thinking we’re 16 points better than they are,&uot; King said. &uot;At least we showed our kids we can compete for a playoff spot in this rugged district. That’s what our goal is.&uot;
