VICKSBURG &045; Ke’Airra Jones hit home runs in her first two at bats to lead Natchez to a 16-2 rout of Vicksburg on Tuesday at Halls Ferry Park.
Jones’ home runs led a 21-hit attack as Natchez picked up its third win of the season and evened its division record at 1-1.
For Vicksburg, it was one of the worst losses to date in a 1-15 season.
&uot;I don’t know what to say,&uot; said a glum VHS coach Kori Crutchfield afterwards. &uot;We must be the most inconsistent team in the nation. We must be the slowest team in the nation and one of the smallest, but that’s Vicksburg.
&uot;You never how they’re going to show up on a given day. At the Clinton Tournament, we hung in there with two pretty strong teams in Florence and Pearl. But today, it looked like we’d had never practiced before,&uot; Crutchfield said.
The Missy Gators played bad in the field (eight errors) and looked even worse at the plate, getting just two infield hits and striking out seven times, four of which were out-right swing and misses.
Natchez coach Charlie Williams was glad to see his team hit the ball well.
&uot;We cut down on all of the foolishness and started doing some of the little things I’ve been trying to get them to do,&uot; Williams said. &uot;We were focused, and this was the best we’ve hit all year.&uot;
VHS looked to be in good shape after giving up just two runs in the first, one of which being Jones’ lead-off home run to right.
But Natchez pitcher Keneshia Jackson struck out two in VHS’ at bat to leave the score at 2-0. The Lady Bulldogs then struck for six runs in the second to go up 8-0.
Vicksburg’s only runs came in the second and fifth and both were made off Natchez errors. Kelli Brewer and Savannah Pritchard had the only hits, both coming in the fourth.
Natchez, meanwhile, got a 4-for-4 game from Rocklyn Champlin and Jones was 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI. Cacey Champlin had three hits, including a double while Veralene Thompson knocked in two off two hits and
Huntington 5, River Oaks 2
MONROE, La. &045; A day after having a pitcher throw a perfect game on them, the Huntington Lady Hounds got some key hits and delivered on defense with a win over a good River Oaks team on the road.
The Lady Hounds (10-11) broke a 2-2 tie in the fourth, and Jessie Lee allowed only two hits to put away the Lady Mustangs (26-6).
&uot;They played much better,&uot; Huntington head coach Rut Horne said. &uot;This was a team that has won several tournaments, and they played Franklin Academy real tough. A complete turnaround today. After that one bad inning, we settled down and made pretty godo plays.&uot;
The Lady Hounds got the hits in the middle innings to take the lead and hold on. Grubby Harrell broke the tie in the fourth with a single that drove in Julie Moak after Moak tripled to lead off the inning.
Harrell had a key hit in the second that got things rolling. She reached on a singled and moved up on a Katie Moak bunt single, but the throw to first went into right field to score Harrell and put Katie Moak on third.
Lacy Willard’s groundout to short scored Katie Moak.
Huntington added two more in the fifth when Jessie Lee singled in Sarah Carlton and Sarah Loomis’ sacrifice fly scored Lee.
&uot;The biggest surprise of them all is my designated player Sarah Carlton,&uot; Horne said. &uot;She’s a girl who we haven’t played much before, but she’s been doing the job. She’s got a very good swing and a good eye for the ball.&uot;
West Lincoln 10, Cathedral 6
WEST LINCOLN &045; The Lady Wave (0-2, 5-5) rallied from two runs down to take a 5-3 lead in the top half of third before things just went flat.
West Lincoln, meanwhile, kept the pressure on. The Lady Bears’ two runs in the third tied it up, and they added three in the fourth and two more in the sixth to break the game open.
&uot;They started hitting the ball, and we didn’t,&uot; CHS head coach Gary Blackwell said. &uot;We did have a few good hits that were just right at them, but overall we weren’t hitting the ball. Aa a team, we just didn’t hit.&uot;
The Lady Wave got the lead in the third with four runs with the first two coming on a Jennifer Bernard single that scored Elizabeth Blackwell and Megan Whittington. Kristina Brumfield singled in Bernard, and Caitlin Huffines’ flyout scored Kirkwood for the 5-3 lead.
