Who is the typical Adams County or Concordia Parish resident? Census figures tell some of the story, providing a snapshot of the people who make up the Miss-Lou. That’s the name most residents call our area, because Natchez, Miss., and Concordia Parish, La., are so closely tied.
Natchez is the only municipality in Adams County, where 32,591 people live, according to 2004 Census estimates, with just under 18,000 of those living within the city limits.
The county and city traditionally have been almost half black and half white in population. New census figures show Adams County with 52.8 percent black and 46 percent white. Other races included in the population are American Indian, Asian and Hispanic.
Age statistics show Adams County with 26.8 percent of its population under 18; 15.6 percent are 65 years and older.
There are more women than men – by 53.7 percent to 46.3. And in the age group over 25 years, the high school graduates outnumber the college grads, 73.4 percent to 17.5 percent.
Adams County is a place where a large majority of families are homeowners – 70.3 percent, according to 2000 figures. And the average household includes 2.48 people.
Median income for a Natchez-Adams County family is $25,234. In Mississippi the median is $31,330.
In Concordia Parish, Natchez’s neighbor to the west across the Mississippi River, the parish population is 19,724, according to 2004 Census estimates.
The racial breakdown is 60.7 percent white and 37.7 percent black. Other races noted in the parish census are American Indian, Asian and Hispanic.
High school graduates over 25 years of age outnumber college graduates 64.6 percent to 9.6 percent.
Age groups also are similar to Adams County, with Concordia reporting 27.8 percent of the population under the age of 18, according to the 2000 Census, and 14.7 percent older than 65.
The average Concordia Parish household is 2.6 people. The median income for the parish is $22,742.
