VICKSBURG &045; After nearly three weeks off, few people expected Porters Chapel to be the well-oiled machine it had been in dismantling its first two opponents.

And it wasn’t. But it still wasn’t rusty enough to slow down for Tensas Academy.

Hayden Hales threw for 198 yards and four touchdowns &045; three of them on screen passes &045; and the Eagles held Tensas to 101 yards of total offense in a 30-3 rout.

Chris Mixon added 193 total yards for PCA &045; 124 rushing and 69 on three catches &045; and took two screen passes 27 and 36 yards for touchdowns.

&uot;We were probably a little rusty early tonight,&uot; PCA coach Randy Wright said. &uot;We made a few mistakes. But overall, that’s a good quality win for our program. I’m real pleased with our effort tonight and real happy with the outcome.&uot;

PCA (3-0) hadn’t played since Aug. 26 because of Hurricane Katrina, and it showed. The Eagles lost three fumbles, Hales threw one interception and the defense allowed Tensas (1-3) to move the ball almost at will in the first half.

The Chiefs took over after Hales’ interception on the second play of the game and marched to the PCA 21 before stalling. Zach Jones came on for a field goal, but a mishandled snap led to an interception by Mixon at the 9-yard line.

Two plays later, Hales connected with Cole Smith on an 83-yard touchdown pass to put PCA on the scoreboard with 3:39 to play.

&uot;We’re controlling the ball and moving, moving, moving. Then all of a sudden, bam. We worked that hard at least for field position, then all of a sudden they throw a long pass and all of that work just disappeared,&uot; Tensas coach Chris Jacobs said.

PCA continued to do just enough to stop Tensas’ offense the rest of the first half.

Mixon took a screen pass 26 yards for a score with 6:19 left in the first half to make it 14-0, but two other second-quarter drives ended in a fumble and a broken play in Tensas territory as time expired.

In all, PCA racked up 261 yards of total offense in the first half, but had only two touchdowns to show for it.

&uot;Coming out, we were rusty. But we got our minds focused and did what we had to do,&uot; said Hales, who completed 5 of 7 passes in the game.

Things improved dramatically for the Eagles in the second half. Kenny Simms and Mixon both scored on screen passes in the third quarter, and Matt Hall sacked Tensas’ Zach Jones in the end zone for a safety as the Eagles stretched the lead to 30-0. Simms also took a reverse 48 yards for a touchdown, but a holding penalty erased it.

&uot;The screen passes worked real well. We executed on those, and did a good job running the ball too,&uot; Hales said.
