Death linked to hurricane

FERRIDAY, La. &045; A Lake St. John resident died Sunday in the first reported Concordia Parish fatality linked to Hurricane Katrina. A Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Deputy was also injured Sunday when a car hit him as he was directing traffic.

David M. Baldridge, 57, was attempting to move his boat out of the lake Sunday when he fell into the water and drowned to death, a Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman said. His body was found early Monday morning.

&uot;It appears that he may have hit something that threw him out of the boat,&uot; CPSO Capt. Charles Tarver said.

Sheriff’s deputy Denis Mulvihill, 35, was injured Sunday night. He was directing traffic near the intersection of Louisiana 15 and U.S. 84 when a vehicle struck him, knocking him into the path of a another vehicle that then ran over his leg. Mulvihill suffered a fractured skull.

He had surgery early Monday morning at Rapides General Hospital in Alexandria and was resting in a private room Tuesday, CPSO spokesman Kathleen Stevens said.

A CAT scan showed no brain damage.

&uot;This was an awful accident, but we’re all extremely grateful that deputy Mulvihill was not injured any worst than this,&uot; Concordia Parish Sheriff Randy Maxwell said.
