Red Cross checks among good news

Before we jump into the week ahead, let’s take a break to review the good news that made headlines last week:

The American Red Cross gave out $13 million in relief checks to almost 11,000 people affected by Hurricane Katrina.

While some tried to beat the system, attempting to get checks for which they didn’t qualify, the vast majority did qualify and can use those checks for housing, food, clothing and other basic necessities. And that helps their families get a fresh start on building back their lives.

What’s more, our local system was apparently among the most organized and successful &045; and likely the reason so many people came from two states to take part.

Adams County supervisors announced they are seeking some additional economic development incentives for Adams County.

The Board of Supervisors asked county attorney Bob Latham to draft a resolution asking legislators to expand the Rural Renewal Community designation for the county. That status brings more tax breaks and other incentives to businesses that locate in Rural Renewal Communities.

After months of negotiations, the federal government has awarded a $5.7 million contract for finishing construction of the Natchez federal courthouse. Construction of the courthouse should start in October of this year and be complete by December 2006.

The courthouse will be a welcome addition to Natchez’s downtown, bringing with it a mini-industry of sorts as attorneys and others involved with federal cases come to town. We look forward to the economic impact the courthouse will provide.

Here’s hoping this week will be even more full of good news.
