NATCHEZ &045; The Cathedral Lady Green Wave wrapped up its District 7-1A scheduled with a doubleheader sweep over a Dexter Lady Bulldogs team that went through a tumultuous season.

The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Sept. 12, but was postponed because of the damage done to Dexter High School, located in Walthall County, during Hurricane Katrina.

Not only that, but Dexter’s softball coach, Zach Ratcliff, left for Georgia during the hurricane and didn’t return to the school.

&uot;He didn’t call or anything,&uot; said Ratcliff’s replacement, Matt Stogner, who became the new head coach of the Lady Bulldogs a week ago Monday.

&uot;I hate that their coach (Ratcliff) left and this coach picked up and helped out,&uot; Lady Green Wave head coach Gary Blackwell said. &uot;This guy was nice enough to fill in. Their girls wanted to play.&uot;

Playing all but one of its varsity players in just the first two innings, Cathedral pounded out 14 hits and got a combined three-hitter from Brandi McGraw and Mae Durkin to win the first game 14-0. That game was called after just three and a half innings.

Five Lady Green Wave hitters had doubles in the first game, including back-to-back-to-back doubles by Caitlin Huffines, Anna Huffines and Kristina Brumfield during a five-run, six hit first inning which included a two-run single by Kalin Kirkwood &045; and all of those runs and hits occurred after the second out was recorded.

Caitlin Huffines and Brumfield had RBI singles and Jennifer Bernard had an RBI fielder’s choice in the bottom of the second as Cathedral (8-9, 3-5) took an 8-0 lead.

&uot;I was in a slump before this, so hopefully I’m out of this,&uot; Caitlin Huffines said. &uot;We were doing pretty well at the plate. The whole team was in a slump.&uot;

Cathedral added six runs in the bottom of the third, four of which scored on a pair of errors.

McGraw pitched the first two innings and allowed just one hit. Durkin gave up two hits and walked four, but the defense got her out of a couple of jams.

Led by McGraw’s no-hitter and a big first inning, the Lady Green Wave won the second game 9-0 in five innings.

Cathedral, the visitors in the second game, scored five runs on six hits, with the big hit being a two-run double by Kirkwood.

&uot;It was one of my first really good hits in a long time,&uot; Kirkwood said. &uot;I had one hit yesterday (against Salem) and these three today.&uot;

While Dexter pitcher Ebony Hampton held Cathedral to just one run over the next two innings, the Lady Bulldogs (0-10, 0-10) couldn’t get anything going offensively against McGraw.

&uot;Brandi has pitched for a long time,&uot; Blackwell said. &uot;She’s not going to walk over two a game. When it comes down to throwing a strike, she can throw one.&uot;

McGraw’s no-hitter was preserved when Chelsea Hertzog’s line drive was caught by shortstop Smith in the bottom of the fifth.

Three of Cathedral’s final four runs of the second game occurred on errors. Dani Roberts’ sacrifice fly scored Claire Kenda in the top of the fifth.

&uot;We’re playing good ball now,&uot; Blackwell said. &uot;We’re playing complete games.&uot;
