Alcorn prepares for Eugene’s arm

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas &045;&160;How would you respond if the other team’s quarterback threw for 618 yards and seven touchdowns on your team?

Prairie View A&M head coach Henry Frazier could do nothing but tip his hat.

Maybe the hollering and screaming was out of his system by the start of this week, but Grambling State sixth-year senior Bruce Eugene absoluletely lit it up against his Panthers last week. The Tigers rolled to a 50-7 win over Prairie View at Dallas and further put the spotlight on a quarterback who may very well be in an NFL training camp next summer.

Now the Panthers have to prepare for their game at Alcorn Saturday.

&uot;Bruce Eugene had a pretty impressive performance,&uot; Frazier said. &uot; I was very, very impressed with that young man and what he did on that field. We didn’t have an answer. He was just in a zone. He took what we gave him. It was a very, very explosive offense, and their defense played well. My kids fought hard, but we were just out-manned. We lost to a very, very good football team.&uot;

It was enough to catapult Eugene’s name to the upper echelon of small-school quarterbacks in the nation. The New Orleans native broke Doug Williams’ school record for touchdowns in a career and set single-game marks for yards passing.

Eugene is part of a Grambling team that is on a serious hot streak right now, and the Panthers may just be glad the Tigers are done on their schedule.

&uot;Coach said records are made to be broken, and that’s a valid opinion,&uot; Frazier said. &uot;Put up 600 yards on me, and I’m not happy about it. It’s our job to stop it. It’s a challenge to my team. You give up that many yards, some of the responsibility has to be on your team.&uot;

It’s also good for the Panthers to have their big two opponents out of the way. Frazier took over a struggling program last year and made strides despite playing Southern and Grambling on consecutive weekends this early in the season.

It’s something no one else has done. And the result?

Southern-Grambling 88, Prairie View A&M 7.

The next two opponents are Alcorn and Alabama State.

&uot;In the past, this is where Prairie View falls apart,&uot; Frazier said. &uot;It’s a challenge for us to make sure we keep the morale high as a staff and my team to reassure them we have a good football team. We have to believe in each other and believe in ourselves.

&uot;It is a challenging stretch. But if we get through those four healthy and united as one, we can be a little more competitive down the stretch. The mark of a good football team and coaching staff is how you rebound from it.&uot;

The Panthers will prepare for an Alcorn team that’s struggling as well and is well hungry for a win. The Braves are off to a 1-3 start overall and 0-2 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, a precarious situation this early in the season.

But with freshman Tony Hobson is trying to ignite a dormant passing game, sooner or later thing will click with Charlie Spiller at wide receiver.

&uot;I think we match up a little better against Alcorn than we do against Grambling &045;&160;that’s for sure,&uot; Frazier said. &uot;Alcorn is a very good football team and a well-coached football team. We’re playing them for their homecoming. We look forward to another great atmosphere. We’ll cherish these moments and be ready to play football.&uot;

The Braves have struggled passing and on defense due in part to injuries. The running game &045; still the tops in the SWAC &045; left Saturday’s loss to Arkansas-Pine Bluff in thin shape after Vernardus Cooper went down with a knee injury.

Jeremy McCoy missed last week’s game with a hamstring injury, but the junior may go Saturday against Prairie View, the SWAC’s top rush defender at 55.3 points allowed per game but worst pass defense at 364.7 per game.

&uot;We’re going to watch the film, evaluate what they’re going to do scheme-wise and put ourselves in a position to be successful,&uot; Frazier said. &uot;We’re the last two teams without a conference win, so something has got to give. We’re still fighting hard and united as one. We’re growing this year. We’re still going to play hard football until we get this thing turned around.&uot;

NOTE &045; Eugene was named SWAC Offensive Player of the WeekŠ.Alcorn linebacker Lester Mosley was named Defensive Player of the Week after a 14-tackle performance against UAPB.
