NATCHEZ — Faith ended up being one of the main factors that persuaded Trinity Episcopal’s Chance Fenn to sign to play football at Belhaven University Thursday morning.
Fenn was trying to decide between offers from Belhaven and Birmingham Southern College, and he said the atmosphere at Belhaven was unmatched by other schools he has visited.
“I really liked it up there,” Fenn said. “It’s a good Christian environment. They have a good program, and I like the coaches.”
Fenn’s mother, Romona, said the coaches at Belhaven sold her son on the values of the university.
“I think he made an excellent choice,” Romona said. “I loved what the coaches had to say about God comes first, family second, education third and then football. I’m proud they got the right order.”
Fenn said he was very excited to sign with Belhaven, mainly because it means he will continue to have the opportunity to play the sport he loves.
“I’ve always wanted to play football,” Fenn said. “I don’t ever want to stop, even though I know I will have to at some point.”
Fenn’s father, Paul, said seeing his son realize one of his dreams was special.
“I’m real proud for him today,” Paul said. “Ever since third grade he has played football and one of his dreams was to play college ball. I’m just happy to see him achieve his goal.”
Fenn said he plans to play linebacker at Belhaven.
“That’s where I want to play and where I like to play,” he said.
Fenn said he made his decision late last week, but the coaches at Belhaven told him to talk it over with his parents before signing.
“I wanted to tell them then and there,” Fenn said.
Fenn said finally signing his letter of intent is a big relief, and he is looking forward to getting to Belhaven to begin his college career.
“I just want to be around new people and get the feel for my new team,” he said. “Hopefully I can impress the coaches and play some next year.”
