VIDALIA, La. &045; In Concordia Park, residents are eager to see what will happen in Saturday’s road tax election.
This small neighborhood just west of Vidalia will see some of the strongest impacts should a proposed road tax in Concordia Parish pass.
Nearly all the roads in and around Concordia Park,&160;including Moose Lodge Road, Freeman Road, Concordia Park Drive and Leroy Williams Road,&160; is among the 82 slated for improvement under the construction plan the police jury has proposed.
And for good reason,&160;they aren’t in great shape. Just ask L.J. Robinson, who lives on Concordia Park Drive.
&8221;It’s in bad shape our here,&8220; Robinson said. &8221;Some of these roads out here, they’ll tear your car up. About three years ago I was driving in Concordia Park, hit a hole and tore the front end of my car up bad.&8220;
Saturday parish residents will vote on the tax, which would raise sales tax in the parish,&160;except for Vidalia and Ferriday,&160;from 7.25 cents to 8.75 cents. The tax would generate approximately $950,000 in revenue, the bulk of which would be used in a bond package for construction on 82 parish roads in the worst shape. The construction would take two years under the police jury’s plan.
Willie Dunbar, who represents the area on the Concordia Parish policy jury, said the tax will provide welcome relief for the roads in the area.
&8221;We need this money to do something about these roads,&8220; Dunbar said. &8221;Most of the people I’ve been talking to understand that we need this and want it.&8220;
Many of Robinson’s neighbors are also in support of the tax, he said.
&8221;I talked to a bunch of them and they want to see it too,&8220; Robinson said. &8221;It’s just ridiculous the shape the roads are in.&8220;
