COLUMBIA &045; Coming off a tough loss to a Centreville team most people thought they should have beaten, the Trinity Episcopal Saints needed a win over Columbia Academy to stay in the race for second place in District 4-AA.
And thanks to key plays by Stevan Ridley and Kris Ford late in regulation and Taylor Fleming in overtime, the Saints got that much-needed win, defeating the Cougars on the road 26-20.
&8221;It was a big win for us. An upset,&8220; Saints head coach David King said. &8221;To get a win like this is big for us.&8220;
Trinity (5-2, 2-1) stayed in the game against a Columbia team that was much bigger than the Saints and got a three-touchdown performance by running back Ben Selman.
Selman scored his first touchdown late in the first quarter to give the Cougars (3-3, 0-3) a 7-0 lead.
The Saints answered with two touchdowns in the second quarter. Ridley scored on a 4-yard run just past the midway point of the quarter and then threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to Tripp Bryant to end the first half with a 12-7 lead.
&8221;They were so big up front,&8220; King said. &8221;We spread them out a bit. We had a lot of receivers with a lot of yards.&8220;
Selman gave Columbia a 14-12 lead with a 36-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter.
Trinity answered again as Kyle Ketchings scored on a 1-yard run, and Ridley’s two-point conversion run gave the Saints a 20-14 lead with 7:36 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Selman once again scored for the Cougars, this time on a 55-yard run with 6:41 to go to tie the score at 20. Jody Brock’s extra-point was blocked by Ridley and the score remained 20-20.
Columbia had one last chance to win the game, but Kris Ford came up with an interception in the end zone on the last play in regulation.
&8221;The kids refused to give in,&8220; King said. &8221;We had a couple of missed extra points and a couple of big plays. It was a big-play game.&8220;
On Trinity’s first attempt in overtime, Ridley scored on a 3-yard run to make it 26-20, but the extra point was no good.
Columbia’s attempt in overtime ended with a fumble that was recovered by Fleming to end the game.
&8221;To come out and score and miss the extra point and recover the fumble, it was a wave of emotion from down to up in two plays,&8220; King said. &8221;I’m very, very please with where we are.
