Board entertains idea of hosting conference

NATCHEZ —The only county supervisor to sit out a trip to Washington, D.C., last week wants to turn the tables on the next such trip.

All of the members of the Adams County Board of Supervisors except for Mike Lazarus went to Washington, D.C., for the National Association of Counties meeting March 3-7. The supervisors also met with the local congressional delegation during the conference.

During a meeting of the supervisors Thursday, Lazarus said that while he thought the other supervisors’ trip to the nation’s capital was a good thing, he wondered if it would be possible for the county to host the area’s congressional delegation for a weekend. An area resident originally presented the idea to him, Lazarus said.

“Maybe we could just throw out the red carpet for them and say, ‘Hey, bring your wife,’” Lazarus said. “I know a lady who will cook for them for free, and that way we can get more one-on-one time with them.”

“Everybody knows that (Sen.) Thad Cochran loves coming to Natchez.”

Supervisor’s President Darryl Grennell said one difference between having a meeting with a legislator in the capital and meeting them locally is that the legislator’s staff is available in Washington, D.C. The legislator is able to tell a staff person to go immediately to a given government office and find out needed information during a discussion, he said.

The supervisors met Thursday to conduct their rescheduled regular meeting for the first week of the month.

•Supervisor Angela Hutchins presented the board with a letter from a landowner who wanted the county to accept land on Cottage Farm Road for use for a playground for 50 years. That acceptance would probably entail taking up the utilities for the property, Hutchins said.

Supervisor David Carter said the land already has basketball courts and some playground equipment on it, and the county has used it in the past but had since then stopped doing so.

Board Attorney Scott Slover said he would need to look at the details of the acceptance before making a recommendation to the supervisors about it.

•The board voted to formally authorize an application for its FEMA 361 storm shelter project. The project is in its first phase and the grant money to build the shelter has been awarded, but Adams County Civil Defense Director Stan Owens said after reviewing the minutes of previous meetings he could not find a formal authorization for the application for the grant that is funding the project.

•The board issued an order to the road department to post signs at the entrance of the Broadmoor subdivision stating that it is not open to truck traffic.

•The board adopted a resolution of appreciation for Woody Allen, who served as the former director of the Economic Development Authority — which was replaced by Natchez Inc. — and the chairman of the St. Catherine Creek Utility Authority. Allen recently resigned his position on the utility authority.
