OLLA, La. &045; Johnnie Lee had his best game of the season, rushing for 294 yards and four touchdowns on 18 carries to lead Block to a 36-6 win over the LaSalle Tigers Friday night in the District 3-1A opener for both teams.
&8221;They held us in check for the most part except for Johnnie,&8220; Bears head coach Scott Green said. &8221;My fullback and wingback got most of their yards in the fourth quarter.&8220;
The most impressive run Lee had was late in the second quarter. With Block backed up at its 2-yard line, Lee got the ball and the Tigers knew it. The problem for them was stopping Lee.
&8221;When Lee got to the line of scrimmage, he broke four tackles. After that he was gone,&8220; Green said. &8221;That broke their backs.&8220;
The 98-yard touchdown by Lee on what was the last play of the first half gave Block (2-3, 1-0) a 20-0 halftime lead.
What was also impressive was Block’s defense, which held a LaSalle (1-4, 0-1) team that had been averaging nearly 300 yards a game to just 108 total yards of offense.
&8221;They ran a spread offense,&8220; Green said. &8221;We put five in the box. We dropped back sometimes seven. We had a safety deep and a safety in the middle. We took away what they do best.&8220;
Block intercepted three passes by LaSalle quarterback James Callender, two of them by Bryan Collins, giving him seven picks on the season. Callender was able to complete just seven passes for a meager 31 yards in the game.
The only thing that went wrong for Block was three fumbles, all on the center-quarterback exchange.
