FERRIDAY, La. &045; Ferriday junior running back Montario Tennessee scored three touchdowns, including the game-winner on a 1-yard run with 1:55 remaining, to give the Trojans a 19-16 win over the Crowley Gents Friday night.
&uot;This was a good game,&uot; Trojans head coach James McFarland said. &uot;It showed some flaws on our part. It also showed some character. We need a game like this.&uot;
Ferriday (4-0), ranked No. 10 in Class 2A, had trouble not only stopping Crowley’s wing-T offense in the first half, but also getting its own offense going against the Gents (2-2).
Crowley scored on a 34-yard touchdown run by Jamal Broussard, a safety and an 8-yard run by Jordan Laudry in the second quarter. Ferriday could only manage an 11-yard touchdown run by Tennessee midway through that quarter, yet still trailed 16-7 at halftime.
&uot;The first half they moved the ball well,&uot; McFarland said. &uot;The second half we made some adjustments.&uot;
Tennessee, who rushed for nearly 100 yards, scored his second touchdown run from 1 yard out early in the fourth quarter.
&uot;He’s going to get most of the carries,&uot; McFarland said. &uot;In our offense, the tailback’s going to get a lot of carries. We try to spread the ball around.&uot;
Not only was the final score close, but so was each teams’ total yards &045; Ferriday had 275 yards while Crowley finished with 261 yards.
&uot;It was gut check time. Our kids prevailed,&uot; McFarland said. &uot;Overall, I’m pleased with the effort.
