VIDALIA — The Cathedral Green Wave saw two leads go away against a good Vidalia team, only to battle back in the eighth inning and escape with a 12-9 win over the Vikings Tuesday night.

Cathedral won the game despite losing starting pitcher Colin Hammons to an injury before he threw a single pitch and committing six errors.

Hammons was supposed to take the mound for Cathedral to start the game, but after colliding with Vidalia’s first baseman on a throw in the infield, he ended up hyperextending his knee, Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley said.

The Green Wave got gritty performances from Thomas Garrity and winning pitcher Blake Martin.

“I thought Thomas Garrity gave us five good innings. He kept us in the game. We brought Blake in late in the game,” Beesley said. “I feel like we’re swinging the bats a lot better these last three games. I hope our defense comes around. I’m pleased with our pitching. Defense is where we’ve got to focus on now.”

The game was scoreless after two innings before the Green Wave exploded for four runs in the top of the third inning. However, the Vikings responded with one run in the bottom of the third, three runs in the bottom of the fourth and two in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-4 lead.

And just when it looked like Cathedral’s five-run rally in the top of the sixth for a 9-6 lead would give the Green Wave some momentum, Vidalia answered yet again with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and one run in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings.

“It came down to we made a couple of errors toward the end that were untimely. I’m kind of disappointed in some things,” Vidalia head coach Kale Davis said. “It was a hard-fought game. We should’ve won that game. But we didn’t. It is what it is. It gave us a pretty good test of what we’re made of. We had some kids step up.”

One player in particular who stepped up for the Vikings was Nathan Bozeman, who was 5-for-5 with three doubles.

Cathedral scored three runs in the top of the eighth and Martin put the clamps on Vidalia’s bats by holding them without a run in the bottom of the eighth.

Martin helped his own cause by going 2-for-3 with a home run and Austin Chauvin went 2-for-4. Garrity as well as Caleb Upton also had two hits for the Green Wave.

Cathedral (3-3) plays at Tupelo Christian on Thursday at 7 p.m. Vidalia (4-2) next plays at the Franklin Parish Tournament, which takes place March 8-10.
