Natchez &8212; Angela Cockerham and Holmes Sturgeon will meet in a runoff Nov. 22 after taking the top two spots in Tuesday&8217;s special election to fill the open seat in House District 96.
Cockerham, of Magnolia, nearly won the seat outright, collecting 2,158 of the 5,060 votes &8212; 42.6 percent &8212; in the four counties comprising the district.
Sturgeon, a Woodville resident, took in 1,149 &8212; 22.7 percent &8212; just ahead of Larry Lee&8217;s 998 or 19.8 percent. Earl Dean Anthony gathered 438 votes, Oliver &8220;OJ&8221; Packnett got 258 and Dorothy Scott Dace Chesser received 69 votes.
Due to an error in tabulating votes from the different counties, tallies that ran in Wednesday&8217;s Democrat were incorrect.
In Adams County, 205 of the 1,658 voters eligible went to the polls. Of those who did, 148 voted for Cockerham, 43 went with Sturgeon with 13 votes split between the other four candidates.
Cockerham picked up 1,466 of her votes in Amite County, winning it by over 1,000 over Sturgeon.
She also took Pike County with numbers similar to Adams County. She came in a distant third in Wilkinson, however, the largest of the four in terms of eligible voters.
Lee, of Centreville, took his home county by a margin of 699-650 over Sturgeon.
