NATCHEZ &8212; Not many people gave the Centreville Lady Tigers much of a chance of defeating the fourth-ranked Adams Christian Lady Rebels Saturday night.
Especially with it being the final game of the ACCS Tip-Off Tournament at the Bob Ulmer Gym and the home team having a chance to start the season 3-0. But apparently the Lady Tigers didn&8217;t get the message.
Senior Brittany Boatner had a game-high 21 points to go with six steals and sophomore Amber Addington had a big game as well with 16 points and five steals as the Lady Tigers stunned the Lady Rebels 47-27.
Boatner&8217;s three-pointer with 3:41 to go in the second quarter gave Centreville (2-1) the lead for good at 15-12. The Lady Tigers eventually increased their lead to 23-13 at halftime.
&8220;Brittany&8217;s playing like a senior,&8221; Centreville head coach Penny Sawyer said. &8220;We have two seniors on the team and Brittany&8217;s playing like a senior. Amber&8217;s a newcomer on the team. She&8217;s a 10th-grader. She plays with a level head.&8221;
Adams Christian (2-1) got off to a quick start thanks to Mattie Geoghegan and Ariana DeLeSalle as the Lady Rebels took a 9-4 lead nearly midway through the first quarter. They didn&8217;t get an offensive spurt like that until they tried to rally early in the fourth quarter.
&8220;We played as poorly as we could play offensively,&8221; Lady Rebels head coach John R. Gray said. &8220;We&8217;ve got a long way to go to be a good team. I take the full blame in the last two showings, even the win (34-28 over Oak Forest last Thursday night).&8221;
Centreville scored four of the last five points in the first quarter to trail 10-8 and then dominated the second quarter, outscoring ACCS 15-3 to take the double-digit halftime lead.
The Lady Tigers used a 2-3 man defense that for most of the game kept the ball out of Katie Ann Swinney&8217;s hands. And when she did get the ball, she either had to pass the ball to one of her teammates or had her shots contested.
Swinney had just two points by the end of the third quarter and finished with six points and six rebounds. DeLaSalle and Geoghegan each scored nine points to lead the Lady Rebels.
Even though the third quarter was as sloppy as one could see, Centreville still outscored ACCS 7-2 to increase its lead to 30-15 going into the fourth quarter.
ACCS scored the first six points of the fourth to cut the lead to nine points, but a basket by Addington and free throws by Marianna Faust and Shellie Vine ended that rally.
&8220;I was proud that they didn&8217;t quit,&8221; Gray said.
Tensas 49, Sillman 36
The Lady Chiefs got off to a slow start, then dominated the second and third quarters en route to the 13-point win over the Lady Wildcats in the opening game of the day (1-1).
Aubrey McEacharn led a balanced scoring attack for Tensas (3-0) with 18 points. Megan Bauerle and Tabitha Howard each finished with 12 points.
Riverfield 37, Huntington 14
Jessie Lee had five points to lead Huntington (0-3), who trailed 10-0 at the end of the first quarter and 21-7 at halftime.
Parklane 55, Trinity Episcopal 39
Mallory Archer led Trinity (0-2) with 15 points. Maggie Jackson led Parklane (2-0) with a game-high 18.
