NATCHEZ &8212; The fifth annual Junior Auxiliary of Natchez &8220;Run for the Kids&8221; was moved from the spring to the fall in part to take advantage of the cooler weather.
That&8217;s cooler, not colder weather. Unfortunately, the unseasonably cold weather kept many would-be runners and walkers indoors this year. And because of that about 60 people participated in the 5K run/walk and one-mile fun run in downtown Natchez.
And even though two of the top three male 5K runners and the top female 5K runner were from out of town, several runners from Natchez did quite well.
Bryan Lagg of Madison finished first overall in the men&8217;s division, crossing the finish line at Memorial Park with a stellar time of 18 minutes and 55 seconds.
&8220;From doing the Natchez 10K (River City Classic) in February, I knew most of the course. (Finishing under 19 minutes) what I was shooting for,&8221; Lagg said. &8220;Overall it&8217;s a pretty good day to run. Cloudy and cool. This is my first time doing this one. I&8217;ve done the Natchez 10K seven times.&8221;
And the weather was somewhat of a factor as the sky was cloudy and the temperature stayed in low 40s &8212; warmer than expected, but still cold enough, especially with even a slight breeze.
Fourteen-year-old Chas Moroney of Natchez finished second overall and won the male 14-and-under division with a time of 20:15.
&8220;The course was pretty nice,&8221; Moroney said. &8220;I was hoping for a better time, but I&8217;ve been sick all week. I lost 11 pounds playing basketball and being sick all week.&8221;
This was the second time in two weeks Chas Moroney finished second overall in the men&8217;s division in a 5K race. He also accomplished that feat two weeks ago at the American Heart Association Miss-Lou Heart Walk.
Steve Monks, also from Madison, finished third overall in the men&8217;s division and won the masters men division with a time of 20:52.
&8220;I thought it was a little cold,&8221; Monks said. &8220;I was uncertain of the course. A little hillier than I thought. It was a good course. I had hoped to run under 20 (minutes). It&8217;s a fun and challenging course. Nice layout, though.&8221;
Janee Routh of Baton Rouge, a senior at LSU, was first overall in the women&8217;s division with a time of 23 minutes and 17 seconds.
&8220;The course is pretty,&8221; Routh said. &8220;It&8217;s fun to do something out of the ordinary. Perfect day to do this. I ran in high school. It was a fun run. I tried to get my sisters to come up here, but they had too many things to do.&8221;
Another member of the Routh family, Stan, finished fifth overall and won the men&8217;s 45-49 age group with a time of 21:13.
Kay Ketchings of Natchez finished second overall in the women&8217;s division and won the masters women&8217;s division with a solid time of 24:15.
&8220;The weather was great,&8221; Ketchings said. &8220;You&8217;ve gotta love the hills. I appreciate JA doing this. The people on the course were great.&8221;
Lynn Bradford of Natchez finished third overall in the women&8217;s division and won the grand masters women&8217;s division with a time of 26:45.
&8220;I like the course. Great day for a run,&8221; Bradford said. &8220;I haven&8217;t run in a long time. Not too many hills, except for the one at the end.&8221;
It was a good day overall for the Moroney family. In addition to what Chas did, Curtis Moroney finished sixth overall and second in the men&8217;s 40-44 age group with a time of 21:30 and Andrew Moroney won the one-mile fun run with a time of 6:10.
Sixty-one-year old Larry Sykes won the 5K walk in the men&8217;s division with a time of 30:57. Martha Smith of Florence was first in the women&8217;s division with a time of 39:46.
