VIDALIA &8212; A Natchez man is in custody in Concordia Parish after allegedly attempting to run over two Vidalia police officers on Carter Street near the Mississippi River bridge at about 4:30 a.m. Saturday.
Denorius Jackson, 23, 115 Virginia Ave., Natchez, and 115 Glenside Drive, Jackson, was arrested on charges of attempted second-degree murder of a law enforcement officer, aggravated flight, possession of marijuana, illegal possession of a firearm and DWI (first offense). Jackson is being held in Concordia Parish jail on a bond of $165,000.
Vidalia Police Chief Billy Hammers said two of his officers attempted to stop the vehicle Jackson was driving, pulling in front of it. Jackson appeared to come to a stop.
When the officers exited their vehicle and approached Jackson&8217;s car, he drove his car at them, police reports said. Hammers said his officers thought Jackson was attempting to run them over. The officers shot out the vehicle&8217;s tires to force Jackson to stop.
Marijuana and a gun were found in the vehicle, reports said.
Hammers said he reviewed the reports and spoke to the officers. Louisiana State Police will investigate the incident, Hammers said. Incidents involving shots fired by law enforcement officers are often investigated by outside agencies.
&8220;We&8217;ll turn this over to an independent agency to look at it and decide what to do with the charges,&8221; Hammers said.
