ANTIGO, Wis. – A man asleep in his motel room was killed Wednesday when a truck smashed into the building, through the room and out the back. The driver, a 58-year-old Antigo man, was being held pending formal charges in the case.
Jesus Manuel Quirios Castillo, 26, died in the accident reported at 5:32 a.m. at the Good Nite Inn, according to the Langlade County Sheriff’s Department. Authorities identified the victim’s address only as Mexico.
Castillo and his brother had been staying in the room in preparation to work on Wednesday’s scheduled dismantling of a local garden center, sheriff’s officials said.
Investigators said the truck entered the motel parking lot and hit two parked cars before crashing through the building. It then struck a garage and an auto before coming to a stop.
The driver was taken to Langlade Memorial Hospital for treatment of his injuries and was to be taken into custody after his release.
His identity was withheld pending the formal charges.
Officials had no immediate explanation for how the accident happened.
“This is a very bizarre and sad case,” said Chief Deputy Brad Henricks as the investigation continued.
