Softball roundups: Lady Vikings top LaSalle

OLLA, La. — Less than a week ago, Vidalia’s varsity fast-pitch softball team was staring at an uncharacteristic 0-3 start.

In each of those losses — two to Neville at home on Feb. 20 and then at Franklin Parish last Thursday — the Lady Vikings gave up at least 10 runs.

But Vidalia has made quite the turnaround since then. After going 3-1 at the Neville Tournament last weekend, the Lady Vikings kept the momentum going Monday afternoon by making quick work of the LaSalle Lady Tigers 12-2 in five innings.

“We put together a complete game for the first time this season,” Lady Vikings head coach Gary Paul Parnham said. “We had only one error. We hit the ball well. We had about 10 hits. Laura Perilloux threw well. She threw strikes.”

Vidalia scored in each of the five innings. The Lady Vikings took a 3-0 lead in the first inning and then added one run in the top of the second, three in the top of the third and one in the top of the fourth to go up 8-0. LaSalle scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it an 8-2 game.

But the Lady Vikings responded with four runs in the top of the fifth, which included a two-run home run by Kelsie Partridge, and Perilloux kept the Lady Tigers scoreless in the bottom of the fifth to end the game by way of the 10-run rule.

Kennedy Beard went 3-for-5 with a double and two runs batted in and Taylor Rogers was 3-for-4 to lead Vidalia at the plate. Partridge ended up with three RBIs for the game.

“It was about a close to a complete game as you can get. That was a good win. That was a big win.”

With the win, Vidalia improved to 4-4 on the season and plays host to Block today at 4 p.m.

Wesson 6, Cathedral 4

WESSON — In a game which a few miscues were the difference, the Wesson Lady Cobras held on to defeat the Cathedral Lady Green Wave Monday night.

Cathedral scored two runs in the top of the first inning, but Wesson rallied for four runs in the bottom of the second inning and then added two runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 6-2 lead.

Lady Green Wave head coach Gary Blackwell said the bottom of the second inning was the difference in the outcome.

“We had one bad inning in the second. Two hit batters and an error. That one bad inning. Other than that we played an excellent game,” Blackwell said.

Wesson won the game despite having just three hits. And none of them went for extra bases. Mollie Devening, who was charged with the loss, gave up just one hit in two innings and Ginny Daggett allowed two hits in four innings.

“Ginny came in the third, and they had two hits after she came in,” Blackwell said. “We (also) left 10 batters on base. We had the bases loaded once and had two runners on a couple of times. We just couldn’t get them in.”

Devening went 2-for-3 while Beth Fortenbery was 2-for-4 and Daggett had a triple for Cathedral, which had eight hits in the game.

The Lady Green Wave (2-1) hosts Loyd Star Thursday with the junior varsity game at 5 p.m. and the varsity game at 6 p.m.
