NATCHEZ — Five Adams County Christian School errors made the difference Tuesday night in the Rebels’ 10-7 home loss to Central Hinds.

“Our defense was terrible,” ACCS head coach Hunter McKeivier said. “That’s the simple way to put it. We have to go back to work (today) and work on fundamentals and catching fly balls and ground balls.”

The first major miscue for the Rebels occurred in the top of the third inning with ACCS leading 3-1. With two outs in the inning, Central Hinds catcher Jake Hale hit a high fly ball to ACCS left fielder Cody Rhinehart. Rhinehart got under the fly ball, but it popped out of his glove and two runners were able to come around to score. Hale and Central Hinds’ Keller Bradford also came around to score in the inning to give the Cougars a 5-3 lead.

ACCS was able to come back to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth inning on RBI-singles by Christopher Perry and Brandon Ross.

Central Hinds managed two more unearned runs on one ACCS error in the top of the fifth inning to take a 7-5 lead. Then the Cougars added three more runs, two of which were unearned, in the sixth inning to go up 10-5.

ACCS scored one run in each of the last two innings of the game but was unable to make the full comeback.

McKeivier said the Rebels, who finished the game with eight hits, hit the ball well at times, but he was not satisfied with the team’s consistency on offense.

“We put the ball in play, but I was frustrated with our hitting approach at times,” McKeivier said. “We still had some guys swinging out of their shoes and not focusing on contact and putting pressure on the defense.”

Chris Carrell led the Rebels at the plate. He finished his night 2-5 with a double and two runs scored. Tyler Buckles went 2-4 for ACCS with two singles and two runs scored. Perry drove in two runs for ACCS.

Tanner Martin took the loss for ACCS. Martin entered the game in the fifth inning with the score tied 5-5 and threw the final three innings. Martin relieved starting-pitcher Johnny Smith, and McKeivier said he was happy with the way his pitchers performed.

“I was very pleased with Smith and Tanner,” he said. “They threw strikes and scattered some hits. I was excited to see that part.”

The loss dropped ACCS to 0-2 on the season. The Rebels will face Amite School Center Thursday on the road.
