WESSON &8212; Things didn&8217;t go this way the first time these two teams met.
In fact, nothing from Monday&8217;s night&8217;s game at Wesson was like the first time Cathedral played the Cobras in Natchez and got the win to keep the visitors winless. In the second meeting the Cobras got red hot from behind the 3-point line and got out to a big lead early.
Wesson took a 73-47 win in the process after knocking down seven 3-pointers in the second quarter.
&8220;It was just incredible,&8221; CHS head coach Peter Arnold said. &8220;One of them knocked the corner of the board and went in, and Alex Middleton tipped one and it went in. We spent a lot of energy trying to catch up. They shot the ball extremely well. A couple of them were four feet behind the (3-point) line.&8221;
Brant Hood had four triples in the second quarter, and Mason Warren had three. The Cobras held a 25-18 edge in that second to take a 41-28 lead at halftime, and they eventually led 52-38 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Green Wave (6-5) had success at times and cut the lead down just under 10 in the second half but couldn&8217;t get any closer. Wesson out-scored Cathedral 21-9 in the fourth quarter.
Hood had 22 to lead Wesson, while Warren had 20. Matthew Hall led CHS with 18.
&8220;We did well in the first half,&8221; Arnold said. &8220;We just played our game and had 28 at half, which is about average. The problem was they had 41. We got impatient in the second half. When you get behind, you lose a lot of your energy playing defense. They&8217;re an up-tempo team, and we&8217;re not. We trailed the whole game, and that&8217;s not the tempo want to play.&8221;
Trinity boys 47, Central Private 33
CENTRAL, La. &8212; Credit Trinity Episcopal&8217;s boys for sticking to better things after Saturday&8217;s win over Silliman. A win over a Class AAA team on its home floor can sure set well with everyone.
The Saints (6-2) broke away from a 21-21 tie at halftime to outscore the Rebels 13-6 in the third and fourth quarters to take the win. They led 34-27 heading into the fourth.
Stevan Ridley led Trinity with 19.
Central Private girls 50, Trinity 37
CENTRAL, La. &8212; Shots weren&8217;t falling, and the third quarter wasn&8217;t good to a visiting team that&8217;s played three games in four days.
Central Private led 19-16 at half and outscored Trinity 19-16 in the third to hold a 35-25 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Lady Rebels had the edge on free throws as they converted 22 of 37 while Trinity &8212; whistled for 27 fouls &8212; hit just three of nine.
Mallory Archer led Trinity (7-4) with 16. Sonni Kirkwood&8217;s 22 points led CPS.
Wesson girls 43, Cathedral 31
WESSON &8212; When the Lady Wave goes flat at one point during a game, all Cathedral head coach Kathy Graning can do wonder.
It happened again Monday night after her club took a 12-7 lead by the end of the first quarter. Wesson battled back to take a 16-15 lead at the break and outscored Cathedral 15-10 in the third to lead 31-25 after three.
&8220;We&8217;re missing some easy shots under the goal still,&8221; Graning said. &8220;We&8217;re not getting up and down the floor well for one thing. Our offense just kind of stalls in the middle part of the game. We&8217;re not getting anything going.&8221;
