Hounds wind up in finals of S-I tourney

ROLLING FORK &8212; That&8217;s the thing about Huntington&8217;s zone press.

Perhaps the Hounds&8217; two quickest players &8212; Antonio Jordan and Brandt Bradley &8212; are in the back. So don&8217;t get any wise ideas of trying to throw the ball over their full-court press and getting an uncontested bucket.

Porters Chapel tried it, had a bunch of deep passes intercepted and struggled early in a 65-28 Hounds win at the Sharkey-Issaquena tournament. The Hounds (12-1) led 18-8 after the first quarter and held an 18-3 advantage in the second quarter to put the game away.

&8220;Our back two guys stole a lot of balls,&8221; Huntington head coach David Boydstun said. &8220;Tony and Brandt in the back &8212; a guy looks open, but he&8217;s not. They didn&8217;t shoot the ball very well and didn&8217;t handle the ball very well. We got them down early and kept the pressure on them.&8221;

The Hounds stayed with that 1-2-1-1 press for the first half and led 36-11 when the second half began. There they pulled back into a 1-3-1 half-court trap and increased the lead to 51-18 heading into the fourth quarter.

The win puts the Hounds in the tournament championship at 4:45 p.m. Friday against the winner of today&8217;s Sharkey-Manchester game.

&8220;This is different people we haven&8217;t seen before and people we may see down the road,&8221; Boydstun said.

&8220;They (PCA) played CM&I a pretty good ball game. I think we&8217;re going to be competitive. Our kids are playing hard &8212; real hard &8212; and we&8217;re getting better every night.&8221;

Zach Brown led the Hounds with 12 points.

Natchez High 42

LAFAYETTE, La. &8212; Natchez High&8217;s stay at the St. Thomas More Sunkist Shootout was a brief one, and Wednesday&8217;s loss sent the Bulldogs home with an 0-2 mark.

The Bulldogs (5-6) fell behind in the second and third quarters against the Houma, La.-based Terriers after trailing 17-13 at the end of one. Vandebilt held a 13-6 edge in the second and 18-9 edge in the third to lead 48-28 heading into the fourth quarter.

Devin Andrews led Vandebilt with 18. Jeremy Houston&8217;s 11 led Natchez.

French Settlement 59, Block 36

SICILY ISLAND &8212; The visiting Class B Lions from Livingston Parish had the upper hand in the third quarter in this one after holding a 27-21 lead over Block at the break.

French Settlement outscored Block 20-5 in the third quarter.

Brant McMorris led the Lions with 19 points. Block&8217;s top guy was Marcus Curry with 10.

Porters Chapel girls 50, Huntington 43

ROLLING FORK &8212; Huntington head coach Penny Moak can take the high road on Wednesday&8217;s free throw disparity. The Lady Hounds were responsible for putting PCA on the line for 36 free throws while they shot only eight.

The Lady Eagles hit 23 of 36 from the line for the game.

&8220;That tells the story,&8221; Moak said. &8220;We pretty much did it, too. We were mentally not in it. A little bit of reaching, but it was mostly our post players who were fouling. They had a girl who they would post up. She wasn&8217;t a big girl or anything like that, but we seemed slow inside today.&8221;

PCA led 22-19 at the break, but Huntington fought back in the second half and took the lead early in the fourth. PCA then got the lead with three minutes left, went into a stall and forced the Lady Hounds to foul to stop the clock.

The Lady Eagles hit nine of 11 from the line in the fourth.

Huntington will play at 3:30 p.m. today against the loser of the Strider-Deer Creek game.

Marvell Academy girls 42, Adams Christian 29

BROOKHAVEN &8212; The offensive blues carried over into this game, but today it was different. No one found a groove in the fourth quarter.

Up against the top-ranked team in Class A, the Lady Rebels couldn&8217;t put up double digits in any quarter and struggled putting it in the basket. They ended the game with 26 turnovers.

Marvell used a 14-9 edge in the second to lead 21-16 at half but poured it on in the third with a 15-4 edge to lead 36-20 heading into the fourth quarter.

Harrisonburg girls 48, Block 37

SICILY ISLAND &8212; A solid lead heading into the fourth quarter was what the Lady Bears wanted, but they didn&8217;t anticipate scoring just two points in the fourth.

And yielding 17.

That&8217;s how it went in the fourth quarter after Block held a 35-31 after three. Harrisonburg rebounded in the fourth to take the win and advance in the Sicily Island tournament.

Jasmine Dunbar led the Lady Bulldogs with 16. Ashley Green&8217;s 17 was tops for Block.

Natchez High girls 52, South Delta 43

GREENVILLE &8212; Natchez High&8217;s second-half efforts put the game away and ended its five-game losing skid at the O&8217;Bannon Holiday Tournament.

Natchez (4-7) led 28-25 at half but outscored South Delta 15-9 in the third to lead 43-34 heading into the fourth quarter.
