Natchez dominates Wingfield

NATCHEZ &8212; Natchez High&8217;s soccer program went through some growing pains in its first couple of seasons. Now Wingfield knows what Natchez High had to endure.

Wingfield brought just 12 players &8212; less than half of its roster &8212; to Tom F. Williams Memorial Stadium Tuesday night to take on the Bulldogs in what was supposed to be varsity boys game in Division 6-5A action. Instead, four of the players were girls.

What second-year Falcons head coach James Collier saw was domination by Natchez as Ross Smith scored three goals and had two assists to lead the Bulldogs to a 9-0 win to remain undefeated in division play.

&8220;We didn&8217;t know what to expect,&8221; Bulldogs head coach Dennis Hogue said. &8220;We&8217;ve never seen them before. We&8217;ve never heard anything about them. When I saw them, I could take a sigh of relief.&8221;

Wingfield (0-1, 1-4), which had been shut out a combined 27-0 in its previous three losses this season, had two scoring opportunities in the first minute of the game, only to come up empty both times.

However, Hogue wasn&8217;t too happy with the defense.

That all changed just 1:27 into the game as Taylor Hinson scored with an assist from Smith to make it 1-0 in favor of the Bulldogs.

&8220;They stayed sharp and focused,&8221; Hogue said of his team. Natchez High&8217;s defense didn&8217;t allow another scoring opportunity by Wingfield in the first half after the seventh minute, while the offense kept the ball on the Falcons&8217; side of the field for most of the half.

Perhaps the one bright spot for the Falcons was the play of goalkeeper Timothy Miller, who made several solid saves that kept the final score from being more lopsided. Miller made several saves on shots on goal by Smith.

Smith did get the better of Miller in the first half when he scored two goals in a span of 3:37 that gave the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead, the second on a nice pass from Kent Calvit.

Natchez (2-0, 5-4-1) took a 4-0 lead when Brandon Lewis scored with an assist from Smith in the 18th minute of the first half.

Jovan Robinson received a nice cross pass from Smith and scored in the 23rd minute and the Bulldogs had a commanding 5-0 lead. John Isaac&8217;s goal in the 25th minute gave them a 6-0 halftime lead.

&8220;I got a lot of good passes,&8221; Smith said. &8220;I appreciate getting the passes from my teammates. I tried to help the team out. I had six shots. We communicated way better than we normally do.&8221;

Natchez didn&8217;t score again until the 13th minute of the second half when Jered Anderson scored on a goal after Miller misplayed the ball.

But Smith finally scored his third goal of the game at the 21st minute of the second half. Jeremy Buckles played goalkeeper in the first half and then got on the field during the second half and scored in the 23rd minute.

&8220;It was just wide open,&8221; Buckles said. &8220;I thought about passing it, but I was too far up. I had to do it. I got greedy.&8221;

&8220;The whole second half was all second-string,&8221; Hogue said. &8220;They played their assignments well. They communicated well. They scored two goals.
