PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas &8212; Pop quiz: When was the last time Alcorn State started the SWAC season with two victories?
The answer was 2002 &8212; until Wednesday night.
Delvin Thompson scored 25 points, and Almaad Jackson added 18 points and seven rebounds to lead Alcorn to a 72-64 victory over Prairie View. The victory was the second straight for Alcorn (2-0, 2-9) after going winless in the non-conference season.
&8220;It doesn&8217;t mean anything right now,&8221; Alcorn coach Samuel West said. &8220;Winning two on the road helps us, but we haven&8217;t accomplished anything yet. I thank God for the win, and I thank God for my kids.
&8220;But we&8217;re chasing perfection, and until we play the way we&8217;re capable of playing, we won&8217;t be satisfied.&8221;
The two victories to start conference play marks the first time that&8217;s happened since the Braves opened 13-0 in league play in 2002 – the school&8217;s last 20-win season and most recent appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
While that may not be on the Braves&8217; minds, they know the importance of starting 2-0 in SWAC play.
&8220;We were picked like ninth in the SWAC, so I think other people are surprised that we&8217;re 2-0,&8221; Thompson said. &8220;We&8217;re not, but they probably are.
&8220;We&8217;re not satisfied with two wins. We&8217;re trying to go 18-0. Once we step on that bus, we&8217;re thinking about Jackson State.&8221;
The Braves now return home for their first home game of the season on Saturday against Jackson State.
Alcorn built a 17-point lead in the second half &8212; at 54-37 with 13:28 to play &8212; after the Braves made four 3-pointers in 2:16.
Prairie View then slowly chipped into the Alcorn lead, slicing it 64-59 when Jared Ellison scored on a layup with 3:05 to play. Alcorn went more than 3 1/2 minutes without scoring in a drought that allowed the Panthers to get within striking distance.
