BATON ROUGE &8212; Don&8217;t expect Alcorn State coach Shirley Walker to plan her next vacation in Louisiana.

Alcorn scored just 44 points in a road loss to Louisiana Tech in December 2005, and the Lady Braves endured an equally poor offensive showing in Saturday&8217;s 64-49 loss to SWAC leader Southern.

&8220;We played flat. We played scared,&8221; Alcorn coach Shirley Walker said. &8220;We just didn&8217;t come to play. I can&8217;t find another word for it.&8221;

Alcorn scored just four points in the final 11:30 of the first half, as Southern built a 26-16 halftime lead. The 16 points in the first half was just one more than Alcorn scored in its visit to Louisiana Tech on Dec. 22.

Alcorn needed more than four minutes to score its first field goal of the second half, and Southern parlayed an 11-2 run into its largest lead of the game at 44-23.

The Lady Braves (6-11 overall, 4-5 in SWAC) made the game interesting with a 14-2 run to cut the 21-point deficit to single digits, at 46-37, but Southern replied with an 8-1 spurt for a 54-38 lead.

Game over.

&8220;I don&8217;t know what was going on out there,&8221; Alcorn guard Tanika Nunez said. &8220;Nothing was going right for us. We just couldn&8217;t get in the right rotation.&8221;

The 1,198 fans who attended the game expected to see the SWAC&8217;s top two leading scorers &8212; Alcorn&8217;s Rasaan Powell and Southern&8217;s Rolanda Moore &8212; put on a show.

The showdown of top scorers never materialized.

Powell &8212; the SWAC&8217;s leading scorer at 20.0 per game &8212; scored just six points, matching her season low. She made just 2-of-7 shots and 2-of-6 free throws, to go with eight rebounds.

Moore, who scored 32 in last year&8217;s SWAC Tournament final against Alcorn, wasn&8217;t any better. She scored only four points in just 20 minutes for her lowest output of the season, as she made just 2-of-11 shots.

That left the game&8217;s outcome in the hands of the two teams&8217; supporting casts, and Southern (11-7, 8-1) had more than enough firepower against Alcorn&8217;s anemic offense.

Southern&8217;s Ashley Blake led Southern with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Krystal Huggins came off the bench for 11 points and eight rebounds.

&8220;Moore really didn&8217;t hurt us at all,&8221; Walker said. &8220;We just played poorly in the post.&8221;

Shawtawnee Collins matched her career high with 11 points, but most of her points came late in the second half. Tanika Nunez added seven points on 2-of-10 shooting.

Walker said she was proud of the play of true freshmen guards Britany Myatt and Jaelyn Stringer. Stringer scored six straight points in the second half.

The Lady Braves also shot poorly at the free throw

line, making only 17-of-31 (54 percent). Alcorn is shooting just 54 percent at the line in SWAC play.

Southern also outrebounded Alcorn 46-35, and the Jaguars had 21 offensive rebounds.

Alcorn now has a week off before visiting Jackson State.

&8220;This is a good time for some off time. We get a chance to regroup, and our injuries can heal,&8221; Walker said. &8220;I just didn&8217;t expect us to have a game like this.&8221;
