Lady Chiefs stay perfect in district

ST. JOSEPH, La. &8212; The Tensas Lady Chiefs know a thing or two about perfection. They had been perfect in MPSA District 7-A for the past two seasons and were looking to make it three in a row.

All they had to do was defeat River Oaks on Senior Night in the regular-season finale. But the Lady Mustangs were also playing for something &8212; the district&8217;s No. 2 seed at next week&8217;s Class A South State Tournament.

The Lady Chiefs proved why they are ranked No. 2 in The Democrat&8217;s area private school girls poll and No. 2 in all of Class A with a 66-20 win over the Lady Mustangs.

Four players ended up in double figures for the Lady Chiefs. Megan Bauerle led with 13 points. Aubrey McEacharn and Kaitlen Emfinger each had 12 points. Whitney Alford added 11 points.

That gives Tensas (10-0, 25-4) an unprecedented 30 straight wins in district play going back to the 2003-2004 season.

&8220;We haven&8217;t lost in three years,&8221; Lady Chiefs head coach Chuck Bauerle said. &8220;They are real excited about it. They&8217;ve played one game at a time. We got our minds set on South State.&8221;

Tensas had already won the District 7-A championship and the district&8217;s No. 1 seed at next week&8217;s Class A South State Tournament at Glenbrook a week ago &8212; just like Huntington had done on the varsity boys&8217; side.

But just like the Hounds, the Lady Chiefs had a bit of business to take care of before worrying about South State. And they did it in convincing fashion in the first half. They also did it in Tabitha Howard&8217;s first game back after suffering a broken nose two weeks ago against Briarfield.

&8220;She looked pretty good out there,&8221; coach Bauerle said. Even Howard&8217;s eight points were more than the most points the Lady Mustangs scored in any of the four quarters.

FERRIDAY &8212; The Lady Hounds outscored the Lady Trojans in each of the first three quarters, then survived several players with foul trouble late in the game en route to the key win in the regular-season and District 7-A finales for both teams.

With the win, Huntington (4-6, 8-21) clinched the district&8217;s No. 4 seed at next week&8217;s Class A South State Tournament.

&8220;That was our goal at the beginning of the season,&8221; Lady Hounds head coach Penny Moak said. &8220;I just wish we had a better record.&8221;

Lady Hounds seniors Marie Miller and Jessie Lee were honored before the game.

&8220;They&8217;re glad tonight wasn&8217;t their last night,&8221; Moak said.

Juniors Grubby Harrell and Leslie Wagoner made sure of that with solid performances in leading Huntington to victory. Harrell had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Wagoner finished with 12 points.

&8220;I thought that Grubby played a good game tonight,&8221; Moak said. &8220;She had a lot of nice moves on offense. They had a player on their team that was pretty tall and she did a good job guarding her.&8221;

Tallulah had a hard time getting anything established on offense, especially in the first three quarters.

Huntington had an 11-6 lead after one quarter of play. The Lady Hounds only increased their lead by one point in the second quarter, but still maintained the tempo. They then outscored the Lady Trojans 13-7 in the third quarter to take a 34-22 lead.

&8220;I was concerned for a minute in the fourth quarter,&8221; Moak said. &8220;In the last four minutes we had four players with four fouls.&8221;

Despite that, Huntington was only outscored by one point by Tallulah in that quarter.

Moak also said that playing in South State will be a good learning experience for the junior as well as sophomores Donna Tarver and Amberlee Collard.
