City seeks OK to demolish factory

City officials will ask a state board today for approval to demolish the former Natchez Pecan Shelling Factory to make way for a condo development.
Last month, trustees of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History voted to give landmark status to the pecan factory site but said they would allow the city to tear it down. Tearing down the building would allow developers Ed Worley and Larry L. Brown Jr. to build condos at the blufftop site.
But City Attorney Walter Brown said before the city can tear the building down, the department&8217;s permit board must still approve the city&8217;s notice of intent to demolish the facility. Brown said city officials will appear at today&8217;s permit board meeting in Jackson to ask the board to approve the notice.
