NATCHEZ &045; The Judge George Armstrong Library will offer a class on the Internet filing of employee withholding taxes from 6 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 8.

The Mississippi State Tax Commission opened its electronic payment program beginning in May. All businesses will be required to file electronically within the near future.

&uot;The mandatory dates will be different,&uot; said Casey Hughes, who does the filing for the library and will teach the class for business owners. &uot;For the library, we’re required to file through the Internet beginning with the August return.&uot;

Hughes said business owners with employees may fall into several categories. Some may already file electronically. Others may be familiar with the Internet but not with the tax filing. Still others may not be familiar with the Internet or with computers.

&uot;If they already know how to use the Internet and have a computer, I can help them,&uot; Hughes said. &uot;But the class also is for those who are clueless.&uot;

Another set of filers may be those who do not have a computer or an e-mail address. Library assistance is available for them, with morning the best time for business owners to come to use library computers and set up an e-mail address, Cassagne said.

Several Internet service providers allow e-mail addresses to be set up with no charge.

Hughes said the program set up by the Tax Commission is easy to follow. Those who have Internet experience should be able to do it without a problem.

For others, she suggests they call the library, 601-445-8862, to register for the class.

Hughes has experience in teaching library patrons to use computers. She finds most of those who have taken her classes have become regular computer users. &uot;And people are still signing up for those classes. I decided we needed a class for those who don’t know how to file this tax.&uot;
